LEND-LEASE
At a national Sunday school con
vention in New York, answers were
given to the roll call by states. When
the state of Texas was called, a
brawny specimen of southern man
hood stepped out into the aisle, and
with a strident voice exclaimed:
“We represent the great state of
Texas. Hie first white woman bom
in Texas is still living. She now has
a population of over three million.’*
There was a pause of bewilder
ment for a moment, and then a
voice from the galleries rang out
clear and distinct;
“Send that, woman out to Wyo
ming. We need herl”
Local Pride
The inhabitants of a remote sec
tion of our country built a bridge
across a local river. It was a fine
structure and should be decorated,
they thought, with a suitable in
scription. The brightest minds of die
town grappled with the problem,
but nothing quite expressed the
pride and satisfaction of the com
munity. The tablet that was finally
put up read: “This bridge was
made here.’’

SLOW TRAIN
An American in England was giv
ing some illustrations of the size of
his country.
“You can board a train in the
State of Texas at dawn,’’ he said,
impressively, “and twenty - four
hours later you’ll still be in Texas!’’
“Yes,’* said one of his English
listeners, with feeling, “We’ve got
trains like that here, too.**
Pardon?
Senator Leverett Saltonstall got
this letter from a feminine con
stituent: “Please send me the name
of that Government agency from
which I can borrow money, interest
free. With the money. I’ll buy Unit
ed States savings bonds, and I’ll
use the interest from the bonds to
pay my income tax.”

“My wife doesn’t understand me.
Does yours?”
“Dunno. Never heard her men
tion your name.”
GOING DOWN
A smart buyer telephoned for
price on a carload of canary bird
seed. Later he asked if the same
price would hold good on half a
car. Having been assured of this,
he later called up and wanted to
know if the price would be the
same on five hundred pounds. The
seller finally agreed to make the
same price. Later he called up and
wanted to know if the same p. ice
would hold good on one hundred
pounds. The dealer, very much out
of patience, replied, “If you will
send your darn old canary over to
our store we will feed him for
nothing.”

as her aunt thought good for her,
she was Informed that she could
not have any more.
“Pshaw!” exclaimed the In

Polio Cases for 1951 ^
ANN ARBOR — Approximately
27,000 cases of polio will occur in
the United States during 1951, a
University of Michigan school of
public health statistician has pre
dicted.
“There are a number of reasons
for supposing that 1951 will be a
far less severe year for polio than
the record year of 1949 during
which about 43,000 dases were re
ported,” Dr. Fay M. Hemphill in
dicated.
Dr. Hemphill’s “guesstimate” is
based on figures supplied to him
through the National Foundation
for Infantile Paralysis, Inc., by
the United States public health
service which receives weekly re
ports from the various state health
departments throughout the na
tion.
Since June, 1950, he has been
making a continuous statistical
study of the areas* and number of
polio cases occurring in the Unit
ed States. His studies are spon
sored by grants from the National
Foundation for Infantile Par
alysis, Inc.
HUSBAND HAPPY—HIS

him regular.” Mrs.

0 Business men up and down Main Streets and
small factories concerned with consumer goods
md commodities, are operating in a twilight of
mcertainty over price controls*
0,Price control officials are stuck with
sontrol laws they don't think will work and are
loathe to put provisions of the new act
into effect. Everyone, even proponents
of new control law enacted by Congress,
agrees prices are bound to go up • • •
prices may be stabilized, but on higher
level than at present* OPS officials
reason consumers will blame them if
prices go up as they WILL go up, hence they will
rait until last minute, or until they are con-
rinced this Congress will not vote amendments be
fore placing new regulations into effect*
CONGRESS MAY CONSIDER SLAUGHTER CONTROLS
• There is some talk Congress might consider
going back to slaughter controls on meat animals,
but there is little indication there will be
further basic amendments. Look for another message
from President Truman seeking to tighten up
present act.
0 So, for business, there is period of con
fusion and uncertainty ahead. For retailers and
rholesalers there is a status quo, for new
sustomary margin mark-ups apply to future regu
lations and NOT to those pow in effect, so prices
oust be based on present rules.
0 Within next few weeks, look for OPS crack-
iown on ceilings violators by enforcement divi
sion; look for department of justice arrests for
violations of Installment credit controls regu- i
Lations, and expect arrests for cheating on
Inventories above limitations fixed by national
production authority*
0 Retailers from throughout country report
nore than seasonal pick-up in clothing sales, in
oany instances due to bargain sales to whittle
iown inventories. Even fall clothes are bginning
to sell and NOT at bargain prices. Early pick-up
Is predicted in sales of shoes, hosiery and
children's wear, the latter a seasonalMncrease
due to start of school term in September.
0 Of interest to merchants who buy and sell
cotton textiles and to merchants in cotton
producing areas, bumper crop of 17,266,000 bales
Is forecast by federal crop reporting board.
