MORE ENFORCEMENT POWER
The first official patrol commis
sions ever awarded to members
of the State Highway Depart
ment’s law enforcement branch
have been signed by the Gover
nor James F. Byrnes.
The commissions w’ere given
to all “qualified and trained”
patrolmen, ' recommend to the
governor by Chief Highway Com
missioner Claude R. McMillan as
provided by a new law passed
by the 1951 General Assembly.
The commissions authorize the
patrolmen £b assert the same
power as given county sheriffs in
matters pertaining to highways
and traffic, and the same power
as deputy sheriffs in criminal
cases.
