Should child problems be treated early?
Answer: Yes, says Elizabeth Re-
v plogle in Understanding the Child.
The head of a large child guidance
center is reported as stating that
‘Tor a pre-school child, it takes less
than six months to correct a prob
lem, and sometimes even one treat
ment is enough. But it takes nine
months for the work to be done in
a six- to eight-year-old child, a
year to a year and a half to help
the child between eight and adole
scence, and two to four or more
years to help the adolescent with
his problem—if then". Yet the dif
ficulty could probably have been
avoided if the parents had had
enough patience, understanding and
love.
Will hypnosis give you self-
confidence?
r: Not really. The seeming
confidence you may get from “sug
gestion**, hypnotic or otherwise, is
not in yourself but in the person
from whom the suggestion comes.
If someone tells you you have noth
ing to fear, you will be fearless just
as long as you believe him—and no
longer. Belief impressed on you by
hypnosis may last somewhat longer
than if you received the reassurance
while awake, but does not change
your deeper, unconscious feelings.
True self-confidence comes only
from within, through understanding
and rejecting the childish anxieties
that have robbed you of it.
Can you think without words?
Answer: Not logically or “ab
stractly.” All the higher mental
processes depend on your being
able to attach verbal “labels” to
your experiences and sensations.
For example, you must know the
word “amdety” (or an equivalent)
to be able to think clearly about
the cause and nature of emotional
disturbances. Tests are said to show
that children who are deaf, while
normally intelligent, are inferior in
thinking power because they know
comparatively few words, and con
versely, there is a definite relation
between the size of your vocabulary
and your chance of business or pro
fessional success.

Decreasing Appetite For Overweight

W HEN AN OVERWEIGHT PER
SON realizes that he is losing
his figure, he will give this matter
more thought than he Will a physi
cian’s warning about the dangers
of overweight to health and life
itself of overweight.
Forgetting that his excess fat
• came on slowly and gradually, he
looks about for a quick method of
removing this excess fat instead
of removing it by the slow, safe
method of eating less food and.
if able, taking more exercise.
There are certain drugs which
reduce the appetite and still
allow enough strength to car
ry on daily work. Two out
standing drugs of this nature
are Benzedrine Sulfate and Dex-
edrine Sulfate. Benzedrine Sul
phate, amphetamine, first be
came widely known because a
group of university students
found that it removed fatigue
and allowed them to study and
keep bright for many extra
hours. Later it was found that
the individual could not only do
with less sleep but with less
food also because ha did not
become hungry.
In some cases of overweight phy
sicians consider that the use of a
hunger-reducing drug is advisable.
Some expert advice on this subject
is given in the British Medical
Annual by a group of physicians.
In investigating Benzedrine Sulfate
and Dexedrine Sulfate, they found
that both drugs are effective in re
ducing appetite, mainly through
their action on the brain, but both
cause certain side effects which
must be controlled by the physi
cian or it may be unwise to use
them in certain patients. These
side effects are dizziness, depres
sion, insomnia, feelings of frustra
tion, dryness and a metallic taste
in the mouth. It was found that Dex
edrine Sulfate caused fewer side
effects than Benzedrine Sulfate.
Both drugs give a feeling of well
being.
Reducing the food intake is al
ways necessary with every method
of reducing overweight.
Skimmed milk may be substituted
for whole milk in the diet without
much nourishment loss if the fat
content in milk seems to upset your
liver.
Injury or illness may so affect the
\ nerves that the patient is unable
to continue the work of which he
was capable before the disability
occured.
Along with the hardening of the
arteries, especially of the brain,
goes rigidity of thought. As the
blood vessels lose flexibility, so does
the mind.
Homogenization is a process by
which a solid or liquid is broken
into many small particles and
dispersed in a liquid without sepa
rating on standing.

dust, if very coarse.
Mulch is usually applied four or
five inches in depth.

The U.S. department of agricul
ture in a general crop report in
January reported stocks of nearly
2,161 million bushels of corn re
mained on farms at ttie beginning
of the year, and these were bol
stered by relatively large stocks
of other feed grains.

While these farm supplies of feed
grains were larger than in all but
three years on record, they were
considerably smaller than on Jan
uary 1 of the past two years, in total
and particularly per animal unit to
be fed, the report stated.
Hay stocks appeared ample in
most areas. Farm stocks of wheat,
however, were smaller than aver
age but slightly larger than a year
ago. Soybean stocks were much
larger than on any other January
1, because of the record crop.
As for the wheat prospect, a rel
atively large acreage of winter
wheat, a sixth more than average,
was sown in the fall of 1950 under
conditions mostly favorable to ideal
for germination and early growth,
the report said.

doing this type of party. If you're
serving a fruit punch, this can be
all set, too, in a large bowl, chilling
in ice.

listed a number of general farm
situations that might affect produc
tion during 1951. Included were
shortages of soil moisture in im
portant southwestern wheat areas,
prospects of less irrigation water
from snows, freeze damage to fall-
sown grain crops in the south, loss
of farm labor to the armed serv
ices and shortages of repair parts
for machinery.

"Spiced Pineapple Punch
(Makes 2 quarts)
Mi cup sugar
IK cups water
4 sticks cinnamon
12 whole cloves
1 large (46-ounce) can pine
apple juice
1H cups orange juice
M cup lemon juice
Simmer first four ingredients
about 30 minutes. Strain and add to
fruit juices. Chill. Pour over ice
just before serving.

in which you place the punch if
you do not have the bowl, by serv
ing with pineapple cubes. Just fill
the refrigerator ice cube tray with
pineapple juice, or a combination
of citrus juices with a maraschino
cherry in each cube, and freeze
until firm.
For a colorful punch cup garnish,
spear two pineapple chunks on a
toothpick with a maraschino cherry
in-between. Cut a little slit in the
cherry and fit * it over the rim of
the punch glass.

Melt the semi-sweet chocolate
over hot, not boiling, water. Add thp
milk and vanilla, and stir until
thick. Add the nutmeats and salt
Blend well and drop by teaspoon
fuls on a greased cookie sheet
Bake in a moderate (350°) oven for
10 to 12 minutes.
Buttercup Cupcakes
(Makes 9 cakes)
34 cup butter
2 tablespoons grated orange
peel
% cup sugar
1 egg
1M cups cake flour
34 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powdei
34 cup milk
34 cup orange juice
Thoroughly cream butter, orange
peel and sugar. Add egg and beat
thoroughly. Add sifted dry ingredi
ents alternately with milk and
orange juice. Fill greased cupcake
pans half full. Bake in a moderate
(350*) oven for 15 minutes. When
cool, frost with:

194 cups confectioners* sugar
2 tablespoons cream
2 tablespoons orange juice
1-2 tablespoons grated orange
peel
Yellow food coloring
Blend together ingredients in or
der given. Add just enough yellow
food coloring to give an attractive
tint. Beat until mixture has a
spreading consistency.

Applesauce Sponge Cake
(Makes 1 9-inch tube cake)
3 eggs
1 cup sugar
34 cup hot applesauce
134 Cups cake flour
34 teaspoon salt '
1 teaspoon baking powder
34 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon nutmeg
34 teaspoon cinnamon
Beat eggs until light and thick.
Add sugar gradually and beat until
sugar is dissolved. Add applesauce
and beat well. Add dry ingredients
which have been sifted four times.
Beat until smooth. Bake in an un
greased 9-inch tube pan in a slow
(325*) oven for 55 minutes.
There are times when you need a
first course, so split tiny creamy
puffs and fill with lobster or crab-
meat, shredded and mixed with
mayonnaise.
Extend the chicken with oysters
when you want to cream it. Serve
on toast triangles or hot, flaky bis
cuits. If you like combread, try
these in place of the biscuits.
With fruit salads, there’s nothing
better than this dressing: mix to
gether 3 parts soured cream, 2
parts chili sauce and 1 part wort
cestershire sauce. Chili thoroughly.

I N ONE OF the most savage indict
ments of the moral standards of
the American people on recqrd.
Sen. William Fulbright, of Arkan
sas, proposes to set up a commis
sion of eminent citizens to re-eval
uate our moral standards and
strengthen the “faith of all decent
men in our democratic society.”
Among other things, Senator Ful
bright said:
“Too many people in our nation
do not believe anything with con
viction. They question the precepts
of God or of man indiscriminately.
The values of life which were clear
to the Pilgrims and the founding
fathers have become dim and v fuzzy
in outline. False propaganda and
the “big lie” of demagogues have
created doubts in the minds of men.

sponsibility - or restraint, corrupt
free elections and poison democracy
at its source.”
Senator Fulbright’s speech on the
senate floor, in.which he said that
''government and its activities are
in a very real sense, a mirror of
our national life”, grew out of his
committee probe of the reconstruc
tion finance corporation and the
Kefauver committee’s sensational
television side show of the nation
wide crime syndicate and its con
nection with politics in the larger
cities of the nation.

time again that if there is any lack
of faith In our federal government
it has been engendered by “the
big* lie of demagogues which ha ye
created doubts in the minds of
men” and by .the chipping away of
our cherished civil liberties in these
staged committee hearings while
the members have one eye on how
much publicity they are getting and
the other on whether it is making
votes for them at the ballot box.
There is not a man in Wash
ington who knows the facts, who
will not agree that the congress
of the United States is lily
white, with all its imperfections,
as compared to any state legis
lature In the land. There is not
a man here who will not agree
that the entire Toverament of
the United States is a Sunday
school class, as compared with
any given state government.
Challenge to America
The challenge to the moral stami
na of the American people in the
home towns of the country is not
whether some basketball players
accepted bribes, or whether a half-
dozen government employees ac
cepted mink coats or dee* freezes,
or hotel rooms in return for favors,
or whether Costello is still out of
jail where he should be, reprehensi
ble as these facts are. The chal
lenge is whether we shaU keep our
hard earned freedoms and civil
liberties in the face of the mortal
threat of Soviet Communist aggres
sion. This is the one menace this
congress and all the people should
be united in opposing. Never before
have the American people faced a
menace of this magnitude—the
Kremlin blueprint for a Communist
world. Of what relative importance
is the Kefauver committee as com
pared to the meeting of the foreign
ministers of the 21 sister American
Republics here in Washington?
