who are building a new home on

their present home on Martin
street to Mr. and Mrs. James
Leavell. The Leavells hope to
move into their home sometime
in May from the Wiseman Hotel,
where they have made their home

FAMOUS GARDENS
Charleston—Visitor’s to Charles-
ton the last two weeks in March
and the first two weeks in April
will have the opportunity of see
ing the gardens and the historic
homes at their best. The spring
season reaches its peak then, not
only will the famous gardens,
Magnolia, Middleton and Cypress
be in full bloom, but eighteen
of the city’s finest homes will be
opened in Tours sponsored by
Historic Charleston Foundation.

over, and the azaleas have been
little damaged. Many of the flow
ering shrubs and the bulbs were
helped by the excessive cold, and
are blooming as never before.
Starting on the afternoon of
Palm Sunday, March 18, at 2 o’
clock are the Tours of Charles
ton's Historic Houses. For the
fourth successive year the na
tionally important private homes
of the city will be opened to the
public in a series of staggered
tours. The houses which date
from 1712 to 1816, spanning the
golden century of Charleston's
architecture, are handsomely and
distinctively furnished. Funds
raised will go towards preserving
the splendid eighteenth century
architecture of the city. Spring
smiles on Charleston at this time
of year when the flowers and the
homes are all open. Only then
is there so much to see and do;
the city is at its loveliest, the
gardens are veritable grand can
yons' of color, the doors of the
handsomest homes are opened
wide.
In Cypress the black waters of
the garden reflect the blazing col
or of the azaleas as one is pad-
died quietly through a fairyland
of beauty.
The terraces of Middleton,
which is celebrating its two hun
dredth year, slope down to but
terfly lakes, banks of bloom on
every side.
Magnolia, long proclaimed the
most beautiful garden in the
world, is radiant with vista up-
