What’s in a Name?
There’s a lady up near Mankato.
Minn., who is getting herself a
branw-new legal name for 1951.
She was born Ellaneous, and she’s
gotten mighty tired of being hailed
as “Miss Ellaneous.” A school
teacher in Brooklyn is pretty un
happy about her name, too.
“Doody” was a perfectly goo^ cog
nomen until the television program
called "Howdy Doody” leaped in
to favor. Now the kids in her class
are making life very difficult for
her. Which reminds me of a party
named Kissinger in Grand Rapids,
Mich. He petitioned the court to
have it changed to Collins. A few
months later he tired of Collins
and changed to Jones. Then Jones
failed to satisfy him and he made
another shift to Johnson. By this
time his old friends were hppeless-
ly confused. They went around mus
ing, T wonder who's Kissinger
now.”
BLESSED EVENT
Recently one of the single girls
In our office came in early one
morning and/Jbegan passing out
cigars and caddy, both with blue
ribbons. Somewhat puzzled and
more than a little surprised, we
asked the occasion. Proudly she
displayed the solitaire on her third
finger, left hand, and announced:
*Tt*s a boy—-six feet tall and 185
pounds.”
Literal Arab
An American army officer sta
tioned in North Africa took his sig
net ring to an Arab jeweler to have -
the tarnish removed from it The
Arab spoke no English and the
«officer couldn’t speak anything
else. So the transaction was not get
ting any clearer to either of them.
Finally the officer took out a card
and pencil. Trusting that the Arab
knew a translator, he printed in
large letters on the card: "Remove
the Tarnish.”
The Arab smiled and shook his 1
head affirmatively.
Next day the officer called for
the ring. With a smile of triumph,
the Arab produced it. It was still
tarnished, but beautifully engraved
within were the words: "Remove the
Tarnish.”
Out for a Spin
About a year after her husband
died, the widow herself died. When
she arrived at the pearly gates she
asked if she might see her former
husband, v
"What’s his name?"
"Joe Smith.”
“You’ll have to give us a better
identification. How about his last
words? We classify new arrivals
that way.”
"Well,” she replied, "just before
he died Joe said, ’Katie, if you
ever waste any of my hard-earned
dollars, I’U turn over in my
gtave.’ ”
“Oh, sure we know him. We call
him whirling Joe up here.”
Careful Chronology
Judge: "Your age, madam?”
Lady witness: "Thirty years.”
Judge: "You may have difficulty
proving that.”
Lady witness: "You will find it
difficult to prove the contrary. The
church that had the record of my
birth burned down in 1900.”
BE-ARRAN GEMENT
An indignant commuter wrote the
New Haven railroad: "I take your
9:35 a.m. train daily. I cannot get
a seat near the front of the train
and sometimes have to stand all
the way. Several coaches on this
train near the rear end carry very
few passengers. Will you please ad
vise me why those coaches cannot
be put on the front of the train so
we won’t be so crowded?”

One of the most delicate fab
rics of all, when it comes to wash
ing, is wool. Extremely hot water
will actually destroy wool fibers,
sd never put woolens in anything
hotter than lukewarm water.
Don’t let them soak for any length
of time; don’t wring them or twist
them; don’t hang them up to dry.
Wash them quickly, squeeze the
water out gently, and spread them
flat for drying.
II you must hang a woolen gar
ment up to dry, first pin it or
baste it to a turkish towel, and
hang the towel and all over the
line. Or, dry it indoors by spread-
To avoid having woolen gar
ments turn stiff and hard after
washing, add a few drops of
glycerinp or a pinch of borax to
the wash water.
If you want to shrink a woolen
garment deliberately before the
first time it’s washed, soak it in
cold water for about two hours;
then spread it out to dry without
stretching it in any way.

brighter teeth
One of the best ways to keep a
clothesline clean is to take it in
doors when it’s not being used,
and that’s a simple job if you
screw eyes into the posts and'
fasten hooks on the ends of the
line. Mighty handy when a sudden
summer shower pops up and you
want to get the line indoors in a
hurry.
