among the 90O-man crew of the
aircraft carrier Monterey which
swelled a throng of thousands of
visitors In New Orleans, for the
Mardi Gras.
Sub-freezing weather preceeded
this year's carnival season, post
poning several colorful parades
until later dates. There were 13
parades this year. One hundred
an dfifty Monterey sailors march
ed in some of the Madri Gras Day
oarade while others attended
masquerade balls on Tuesday
night. -
The Monterey left New Orleans
February 7, to return# to Pensa
cola, Fla., and resume aircraft
training duties.

White-water work — running
rapids with a canoe—is every
bit as dangerous as airplane or
auto racing, bobsledding or bull
fighting. Each Of these pursuits
has one thing in common: death
is likely to be the penalty for
carlessness or a mistake.
If you must run rapids, here
are a few things that Outdoors-
man Bill O’Brien suggests you
keep in mind:
Don’t venture Into fast water
until you have trained thorough
ly for it. Then have some idea
of how you will get out if you
get dunked.
Never go into the wilderness
rapids when another canoe is
in mid-passage. Wait and see if
the first one makes it. If these
paddlers loose their* canoe, they
can get back to civilization in
your canoe.
Don’t defy rapids in spring,
early summer or late full. Cold
water soon paralyzes the best
swimmer.
If you capsize, stay with the
canoe. If • there’s time, try to
take your kapok-filled kneeling
pad with you when you go over.
It will serve as a life preserver
in case the cagoe gets away
from you. But make every effort
to hang onto the canoe. Its
buoyancy will keep you up In
the ride through the rapids.
Be sure your -most valuable
nacks are secured to the thwarts
by tumplines. Thus your gear
will drag along with the canoe
If you overturn, and can be re
covered downstream.
Try tracking a rapids wher
ever it Is practicable. This elimi
nates the tedious business of
unloading, portaging and reload
ing. Tracking is . sometimes vir
tually the only rescourse when
faced with an impassable rapids
bound by cliffs.
Approach portages at the head
of a rapids or falls with extreme
caution. It is easy to be sucked
downstream Into a rapids.
When departing from a por
tage at the head of a rapids, he
sure your paddles are ready for
Instaht action.
You should be able to read the
river—tell from the surface what
is beneath. Never enter a rapids
until you have studied it
thoroughly for its whole length
Never try your first run in a
deep wilderness area. And a
novice > white-water team should
have considerable experience to
gether in a canoe before trying
new, dangerous waters
