Veteran’s Office Baptist of Joanna Here To Be Closed The Newberry Veterans Ad ministration office is one of the four in South Carolina to be closed on April 1 because of ‘budgetary limitations,'’ accord ing to an announcement from VA headquarters in Washington. This office has been opened since May 1946 Other South Carolina offices to he closed are Florence, Orange burg and Rock Hill. This is a part of the VA’s program to close 321 field offices. In compliance with request of the budget bureau. Cecil J. McFerr^n has been in charge of the Newberry VA office for the past several years. Miss Rosemary Shealy is steno grapher. HENRY WASHINGTON DAVIS BIG COTTON BALE STOLEN FROM GIN A 690 pound bale of cotton, valued at $260 was stolen from the Pomaria Gin Company some time between January 18 and 26. The cotton was sold to the Pomaria Gin Company on the 18th and was not missed until the 26 when it was to be loaded on a truck with 19 other bales. The Sheriff’s force do not have any clues to date, but are still investigating the theft. Mr. Davis has been in declining health two years and seriously 111 one week. He was born and reared In Peak and was a son of the late Reu ben E. and Marian Dunbar Davis. Mr. Davis had lived In Newberry a number of years but for the past two years had been a resi dent of Columbia. His wife, Mrs. Ella Alberta Stuck Davis, died a number of years ago. Surviving are six childre.n George Davis of Whit mire. Mrs. Autry of Columbia. Melvin and Richard Davis, Mrs. Alvin Franklin, and Mrs. James Caldwell of Newberry; five sis ters, Mrs. W. B. Thornton of Greenville, Mrs. Henry Swindler, Mrs. Jim Vaughn, Mrs. Florence Crump and Mrs. J. R. Culley of Newberry; two brothers, Lon S. and Robert Davis of Newberry, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were conduct ed at 3:30 p.m. Monday by Rev. S. A. Bowdler, Rev. Y. V. Gordy and Rev. Jess W. Tomlinson. Bur ial was in Baxter Memorial Ceme tery. WILLIAM WOFFORD RE-ENLISTS IN USAF Sgt. William R. Wofford, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Wofford of Newberry, has re-enlisted for a six-year “hitch,^ according to an announcement by the 1257th Air Transport Squadron, Westover Air Force Base, Mass. Sgt. Wofford is currently as signed as an engine mechanic on four-engine aircraft (C-54’s). He learned • this useful trade at Air Force technical schools. Though only 20 years old, Wof ford Is a veteran of three years service, including 19 months at Goose Bay, Labrador. BIRTH OF A DAUGHTER Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Force, Jr., of Joanna,, announce the birth of a daughter at the New berry Memorial Hospital, Tues day, January 30th. MRS. BRADLEY OUT AFTER OPERATION Mrs. Floyd Bradley, who under went a minor operation in the Newberry Memorial Hospital the first of last week, is getting along fine and is now able to be out again, Lay Cornerstone Laying the Cornerstone for new educational building at Jo anna Baptist Church this coming Sunday The Rev Sam Smith, Superin tendent of Connie Maxwell Chil dren’s Home and former resident of the Joana (Goldville) Com munity, will speak during the morning worship service at the Joanna Baptist Church, Sunday, February 4, at 11 o’clock. This will be a signal day In the history of the church. At the close of the worship service, the cornerstone of the Educational Building will be placed. The Educational Building is now' nearing completion. It con tains thirty-four rooms; four large assembly rooms; twenty-five class rooms; kitchen and serving room; and three offices. A mod em nursery. Beginner and Pri mary Department will be provid ed in the present building. The building and equipment are cost ing approximately $50,000, which will bring the total value of property—land and buildings be longing to the Joanna Baptist or ganization to something over $100,000. Throughout the day, members having united with the church during the past two years will be recognized and will participate in the services. Each first Sunday having been designated some months ago as Building Fund Day, the goals have been set in all departments of the Sunday School for this particular day to aid .In the pur chasing of chairs and tables for the new building and new teach ing procedures. They will move as soon as the Dawkins move to Greenville, where they are going to make their home. Mr. and Mrs. Auburn Lee have moved to 1110 Speer street in the A. W. Murray apartment. Mr. Lee Is the new manager of the Carolina Butaine Gas Company, taking the place of J A. Raimes. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. They were en route to Wash ington, D. C., where they will make their home. Mitchell’s Death Result 'Hot’ Wire William Enoch Mitchell, 43, of Charlotte, N. C., brother-in-law of Deputy Hugh Shannon, and con struction supervisor for Duke Power Company, died at Gen eral Hospital in Greenville Mon day night from burns he received when he came in contact with high-voltage wires while working on an electrical project near Wil- Hamston on January 10. He was a native of Laurens ’’ounty and a son of E. E and Sally (Dodson) Mitchell of 106 East Faris Road. His home was at 1620 Wilmore Drive in Char lotte. He was a member of the Wil- more Presbyterian Church In Charlotte. * In addition to his parents, Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lillian Shannon Mitchell of Charlotte; one son ” 'and one daughter, William E. Cathy of Mllledgeville, Georgia, father of Mrs. E. M. Atchison and Mrs. W. W. Ben nett of Newberry, died Saturday morning after a few days Illness. Attending the funeral Sunday afternoon at Mllledgeville were: Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Atchison, Mr. and Mrs. Roland Hawkins, Mrs. Quattlebaum, Miss Dare Swind ler and Mrs. Estelle Summer. Besides Mrs. Atchison and Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Cathy was survived by his wife and three other children, two brothers, two sis ters, and four grandchildren. MISS ANNIE RUFF'S BROTHER DIES Adolphus Pinkney Abrams, 84. brother of Miss Annie Ruff, died early last Sunday morning at the residence of Mrs. Sam Bain, Route 1, Gray Court. Elmer Shealy is Heart Victi News about Folks In Prosperity wms Ihi Elmer Luther (Dick) Shealy, 55, prominent -citizen of Little Mountain, died Tuesday morning at the Veterans’ hospital In Co lumbia, where he had been em ployed for the past 13 years. He was the son of Thomas Lather and Martha Bowers Shealy of Little Mountain and was a veteran of Worl<£ War One. He was a member of Newberry American Legion post, a Mason, a member of Holy Trinity Luther an church and was active in the affairs of his community. Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Dora Branders, a native of Scotland; a eon, L. Branders Shealy of Newberry; a daughter. Miss Rosemary Shealy of Little Mountain; four brothers, G. L. Shealy of Prosperity, H. 0. Shealy of Little Mountain, B. E. Shealy of Hamlet, N, C., and W. R. Shealy of Columbia, Mrs. Bennie Kemnson of Columbia, Mrs. A. H. ^Shealy of Went Co lumbia and Mrs. R. Wallace of Wofferd College. St. Lukes Church was organis ed in 1846 and this is the first time that this parish has had a resident rector. Mr. and Mrs. Clippard will live in the recently purchased rectory on Calhoun street. The rectory will be re novated before the arrival of Mr. and Mrs, Clippard.
