NORTH KOREA — Members of the 7th Inf Div. band, dug in deep snow, are prepared to play a deadly
tune with their weapons—much different than the music they''play in better circumstances. Note dug-
outs reinforced in photo, to give some idea of depth of snow.

Novel Machine
Now Perfected
NEW ORLEANS, Jan. 9 —
Smokeless powder and other ex
plosives for war uses can be
made from ordinary cotton chop
ped into very short lengths by
a novel machine developed here
in the Southern Regional Re
search (Laboratory of the U. S.
Department of Agriculture.
The short fibers obtained from
cottonseed after ginning are com
monly used in making guncotton
and smokeless power. The supply
of this material is not great
enough to meet emergency de
mands. There is plenty of low-
grade, short-staple cotton avail
able as an alternate source, but
it has to be cut into lengths of
about one-tenth of an inch so
that it can be readily nitrated to
make explosives. Until this ma
chine, there has been no satis
factory device for cutting it.
The machine developed here
is a high-speed, multiple-blade ro
tary cutter, equipped with a feed
er of radically new design which
opens up the cotton prior to cut
ting. Development of the machine
began during World War II as in
surance against an expected
shortage of cotton linters.
After several models had been
constructed a machine capably of
cutting 10.5 tons of cotton lint or
linters per hour was perfected
and installed at Memphis, Tenn.,
to provide an adequate supply of
raw materials to a government
cellulose-purification plant.
A new development is a modi
fied form of the feeder unit, in
experimental use here. It loosens
and fluffs matted tufts of baled
cotton and permits more thorough
cleaning. This will aid in the
production of better cotton fab
rics, especially from hard-to-
clean, mechanically-harvested cot
ton. Development of cutter and
feeder gives assurance of ample
supply of suitable cotton to make
explosives for any emergency.
An experiment in the automotive future it the low, sleek Le Sabre,
a custom built sports car General Motors has unveiled in full-size
model form. When completed this spring the actual car will be a “lab
oratory on wheels" to test advanced design and mechanical features for
possible future use on production models. Only three-feet high at the
cowl, the Le Sabre has a standard 6-inch ground clearance and ample
passenger leg and head room. Magnesium and aluminum alloys are sub
stituted for steel on the body and engine of the car, thereby greatly
reducing its total weight. Harley J. Earl, GM vice president in charge
of styling, shown with the car, said that it has been under development
the past four years. The dramatic, sweeping lines of jet aircraft are
incorporated in its styling them«-
