Wax From Candles
Calls for Caution
With so many candles placed
about the home to give a festive
air during the holiday season, can
dle wax drippings on rugs, table
cloths. and mantels are almost in
evitable
Wax spots on rugs can usually be
removed successfully by first scrap
ing off as much wax as possible
with a dull knife and then sponging
with carbon tetrachloride
When you scrape up the wax. be
careful not to Injure the yarns If
the candle was colored and a stain
remains. try sponging it lightly
with a liquid made of two parts of
water and one part of denatured
(rubbing) alcohol.
As a precaution against fading,
test this mixture first on an incon
spicuous part of the rug.
Wax that has run down from can-
dleholders onto your best linen
tablecloth can be removed by the
same method of first scraping—be
ing very careful not to injure the
fiber or thread—and then sponging
with carbon tetrachloride If the
stain is colored, use the solution
suggested for a colored spot on a
rug, after you’ve used carbon tetra
chloride. Again you are urged to
test an inconspicuous spot for pos
sible fading from use of the solu
tion.

George M. Cohan may have sal
uted the great American custom of
breaking New Year’s resolutions,
but Ernestine Evans assures us
that around the turn of the century
her family played the game of reso
lutions very seriously and for keeps.
The game was invented by the
family’s Aunt Callie whose dinners
were out-of-this-world, and if you
were invited to New Year’s dinner,
you automatically were invited to
dinner on April 1. There was one
qualification, however.
Aunt Callie’s guests were required
to write out one—just one—good
resolution, seal it hi an envelope
and deposit it with Aunt Callie.
' Then, on April 1, the envelopes
were opened and the family, having
feasted on their ‘second’ New
Year’s dinner, judged just bow well
the resolutions had been kept
Typical resolutions covered a
wide range ol resolves--looKing in
the dictionary before interrupting
conversations by asking questions,
folding one’s clothes carefully at
night keeping the kindling box well
filled. Aunt Lou’s anti-gossip prom
ise. and the elders’ promises fo
read aloud and teach the children
to sew.
It was embarrassing to have
broken one’s resolution before it
was read on April 1; thus a lot of
good habits were launched, and it
was a lot of fun, too.
New Year in France

Church. In various rural commu
nities. Ihe cattle are driven to the
door of the village church where
they are blessed by the priest who
also says Mass for their protection
during the New Year;

old - fashioned Santa Claus
embark on technical educa
tion. "School for Santa
Clauses," sponsored by a
Hollywood actors' organiza
tion, is coaching Kris Kringle
"doubles" for their roles dur
ing the holidays.

string some bells and tree orna
ments on narrow baby ribbon and
hang from a huge red bow?
Make your door and window
frames bright and cheerful by
framing them with ribbon and
sprigs of holly. You can hang the
ribbon in festoons across the cur
tains and tie at the sides in wida
sash bows for colorful effect.
Letters to 'Santa Claus'
Come From World Over
Postoffice officials in Santa Claus,
Ind., are accustomed to overload
ed sacks of mail during the pre-
Christmas rush. Senders want their
cards and gifts stamped with the
famous Santa Claus postmark,
plus thousands of wistful letters
addressed In childish screwl to
“Santa Claus, Santa Claus, Ind.**
And then there is the annual
crop of “Santa Claus’’ letters writ
ten by youngsters in far - away
places who haven’t heard about
Santa’s permanent addresa in In
diana, U. S. A. At least m dozen
versions of the time honored note-
in-the-bottle story find their way
into metropolitan newspapers every
year.
The notes, sealed in small bot
tles and securely tied to Christmas
trees, are discovered by Christmas
tree dealers, housewives; and even
enlisted men at naval centers end
military barracks: they come from
places like -Renous, a village in
New Brunswick, Canada, boasting
a total population of BS inhabi
tants
The notes range from the wistful
to the desperate, requesting such
things as a mamma doll, a sled, a
sweater, or • pair at ovanhofta.
