of taking tax returns on all per
sonal property, new buildings
and real estate transfers. Per
sons owning property in more
than one district must make re
turns for each district.
All able bodied male citizens
between the ages of twenty-one
and sixty are liable to $1.00 poll
tax.^ All persons between the

side of incorporated towns and

COLVIN-LAYTON WEDDING
VOWS SPOKEN IN CHESTER
Miss Janie Evelyn Colvin,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John
G. Colvin of Chester, became the
bride of Thomas Harold Layton
of Charlotte, N. C., and New
berry, in a ceremony at the
First Baptist Church at Chester
at 8 o’clock Friday night, Novem
ber 17.
Dr. E. E. Colvin of Florence,
cousin of the bride, officiated
using the double ring ceremony.
Miss Doris Hare, organist; and
Arthur Cornwall, vocalist and
cousin of the bride, presented a
program of wedding music.
The bride was given hi mar
riage by her father, Ernest H.
Layton, brother of the bride-
JAMES A. BOLTON
James A. Bolton, 84, died at
noon last Thursday at the home
of his daughter, Mrs. J. L. Lip
scomb, near Newberry. He had
been ill for about nine months
and seriously ill for the past
week. [
Mr. Bolton was born and rear-\
ed in Saluda County; a son of
the late Abner and Mary Reyburn
Bolton. He spent all of his life
in Saluda County, where he
operated a farm.
He was a lifelong member of
Rock Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conduct
ed at 3:30 o’clock Saturady after
noon with Rev. Alvin F. Boone
and Rev. Henry Bell White of
ficiating. Interment was in Rose-'
mont Cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Corrie Smith Bolton, two daugh
ters Mrs. Lipscomb and Mrs. Kat
ie Parkman of Batesburg, one bro
ther, Clarence Bolton of Green
wood; one sister, Mrs. Mary Ann
Burnett of Langley; eight grand
children and six great-grandchil
dren.

The ushers were: Bobby and
Howard Colvin, brothers of the
bride; Olin C. Layton of New
berry, brother of the bridegroom,
and Elbert J. Dickert of New
berry, brcther-ln-law of the bride :
groom. Harold Walsh and Billj^
Gallman lighted the candles.
The bride’s dress of white satin
was fashioned with a basque
waist and a .lace yoke edged with
aeed-pearls. The long sleeves
ended in calla tips * over the
hands. The full skirt which swep
into a cathedral length train, was
trimmed in lace at the kneeline
of the skirt front and around
the edge of the train. Her finger
tip veil of bridal illusion fell from
a tiara of orange blossoms. She
carried a white Bible topped with
a purple throated orchid and
showered with tuberoses and
satin ribbon. Her only ornament
was a single strand of pearls.
Miss Mary Colvin, sister of the
bride, was maid of honor. She
wore a blush pink taffeta dress
and matching mils. The bodice
was fashioned with., a three-tiered
bertha with rows of lace ruf
fles beneath the folds. This ber
tha outlined a round jreckline in
the front and swept to a point at
the waistline in the back. The
skirt worn over a hoop* was very
full, with lace trim. She carried
a nosegay of orchid . chrysan
themums tied with orchid stream
ers. She wore a single strand of
pearls, a gift of the bride.
The bridesmaids were Mrs.
Bob Westbrook, aunt of the
bride; Mrs. Ed Williams of Edge-
moor; Mrs. B. A. Buddin, sister
of the bridegroom, of Columbia,
and Mrs. R. E. Beck, cousin of
the bridegroom, of Newberry.
Virginia Westbrook of Edgemoor,
and Gloria Jean Gibson, cousins
of the bride, were junior brides
maids. Their dresses were of
blue taffeta and were identical
to that of the honor attendant,
and carried nosegays of gold
chrysanthemums tied with gold
streamers.
Kathleen Abell, cousin of the
bride, was the flower girl.
Neal Dickert of Newberry, nep
hew of the bridegroom, was the
ring bearer.
Immediately following the cere
mony a reception was held in the
social hall of the church. Pf:
During the evening the couple
left for a wedding trip after
which they will make their home
at 1767 Evergreen Drive, Char
lotte.
Mrs. Layton attended Chester
High School. For the past four
years she has held a position
with Thomas and Howard Com
pany in Chester.
Mr. Layton is the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Lay-
ton of # Newberry. He attended
Newberry High School and was
graduated from Newberry Col
lege. He served for three and
one-half years in the armed ser
vices.
