Land Department South Carolina Electric & Gas Company PROSPERITY ITEMS The December meeting of the William Lester Chapter of the U. D. C. was held Friday after noon at the home of Mrs. John Stockman. Mrs. S. A. Quattlebaum, pro gram leader read a timely article, “Christmas of Confederate Days” Mrs. W. H. Caldwell read the poem, “Christmas Bells” and Miss Clara Brown read “The Master Builder.” Mrs. W. H. Caldwell presided over the business session in the absence of Mrs. H. P. Wicker, the president. The chapter voted to send a Christmas cash donation to the Confederate Home in Co lumbia. The hostess, Mrs. Vida Thoma son served a sweet course. The Literary Sorosis will meet Friday, December 15 at 3:30 with Mrs. C. M. Singley. Members will note the change of date, Mrs. J. R. Powell of Swains- boro, Ga., is visiting her daugh ter, Mrs. C. N. Singley and fam ily. John W. Browne of Johnstone and Joe Schmitz of Auburn, Ala., spent Saturday with Mrs. J. Frank Browne. Mr, and Mrs. Byrd Gilson were In Andrews Saturday for the fun eral of Mr. Gilson’s sister, Mrs. John B. Grant, the former Miss Clara Gibson. Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Smith were called to Aberdeen, N. C. last Thursday because of the illness of Mr. Smith’s father, Mr. and Mrs. Smith returned Saturday and reported the elder Mr. Smith better. Elton Sease, Jr., of Clemson College and Johnny Sease of Columbia spent Saturday with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Sease. With the Seases Sunday were Mrs. Tom Sease and two children of Clinton. Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Callahan of Columbia were weekend guests of Mrs. Callahan’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. C. Singley. Misses Ethel Counts, Effie Hawkins and Blanch Kibler, Mrs. G. W. Counts, Mrs. P. E. Wise JOHN C. LAKE . John Chapin Lake, 54, died early Monday morning at the University Hospital in Augusta. Ga. He had been in the New berry and the University hos pitals since Thanksgiving. He was born and reared in Silverstreet, the son of Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Swindler Lake and the late Henry Chapin Lake. He had spent Ms entire life in Silverstreet and was a member of Bethel Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bethel Methodist Church, with Rev. R. C. Emory and Rev. C. W. Brock- well officiating. Interment * fol lowed in the Bethel Church Cem etery. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. H. C. (Lake and the follow ing brothers and sisters, H. T. and A. B, of Silverstreet and F. W. Lake of Walterboro; Mrs. W. A. Cromer Of Newberry, Mrs. E. L. Werts, and Mrs. W. W. Senn of Silverstreet, Mrs. W. J. Bradshaw of Augusta, Ga., and Mrs. J. W. Carron of Miami, Fla., and a numberiof nieces and nephews. Nephews were pallbearers and nieces assisted with the flowers. T Fv"?
