of thousands of farm customers
each year As of June 30 the
utilities were serving more farm
customers than the cooperatives.’
Moreover, when the investor-
owned utilities expand their farm
business with private funds, not
everybody’s tax money, they
have no way of concealing their
profits by calling them ‘capital
credits’ or any other phoney
name. They pay a tax—and a
heavy tax—on every dollar of in
vestment and earnings. And a
second tax is taken from the
stockholder on any share left
for him.
REA has done some good
things. It has enjoyed fine co
operation from the utility in
dustry. But it has many special
privileges. It is a tax-eater and
a tax-dodger, and despite all the
ballyhoo, private enterprise still
leads in rural electrification.”
As I have repeatedly said,
the Washingtion bureaucrats are
trying to Socialize us. Private
power and private medicine are
beng fought. Next they plan to
pour out untold billions meddling
with the standard of living In
other countries. Boiled down, I
feel with deep conviction that
Amerca’s enemies are in Federal
jobs in Washington. We can
fight the open enemy in a war,
but these political parasites are
the termites eating away at the
foundations. Much that they do
seems good; and that beguiles
us to our destruction.
