Certainly we could close many services without tragic consequences to the State, but those who live by and on those jobs might protest. My critic probably misin terpreted the paragraph about a possible investigation of what is being taught. I referred to teaching against our traditions I quote what I said: “Some day, some laymen may decide to investigate our Colleges and schools — Wha they teach and how they teach it. All too frequently children and college students are being taught with accents against the South, or against American free opportunity. Sometimes when the teaching, is not anti- American, or anti-Carolinian, it is not distinctly, emphatically, for South Carolina or the American way of living, govern ing and doing business. Perhaps you will remember the telegram to Senator Olin Johnson from a hundred or more students of our University, urging him to vote for the F.E.P.C. What I wonder about is this: What positive instruction is being given to prove the soundness of our traditions? What do we require of those who teach?” George Warren of Hampton is as sturdy a character as his appearance suggests; and he spoke squarely for the rights of the States and for less Fed eral Control, in his address to the Convention of the South Carolina Democratic Party. The Convention w«is overwhelming in its stand against President Truman and his program of F.E.P.C. and other things of that nature. Many people are taking these matters too casually; it is not the business of the Federal Government to fix wages and hours; nor has it any lawful jurisdiction over the choice of or not. We need a few more re solute men, some men who will not trim or compromise ;men who really stand for something other than office and per quisites of Party or office. The President called the meeting to order. The meeting opened by singing “A Song of the Open Country,” followed by “The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag,” and the 4-H club pledge. Grace Werts read the Scripture and Patricia Shealy led us in prayer. During the business session the roll was called and the minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary. The meeting was then turned over to Miss Jane Winn. As sistant Home Agent. She gave a very interesting talk about Manners in Public Places. There being no other business the meeting was then adjourn ed. I made it clear at that time and I now reaffirm that I am a democrat who believes in and will follow to the best of my ability the principles of the Democratic party as enunciated by Thomas Jefferson and oth ers responsible for its forma tion. I stated that I am opposed to any organization which has for its subtle or outspoken pur pose the promotion of an en tirely new political system of government and I favor an amendment to the Constitution making such action treasonable. I pronounced my opposition ; to the civil rights program pro- : posed by President Truman be cause the program is unfair, unjust, illegal, and unconstitu tional. I declared that I believe in the right of any group of per sons to organize for the promo tion of their social and econom ic interests and that they should be protected by law in the ex ercise of such rights. I stated two years ago and I still advocate a great reduc tion in federal government ex penditures and I am unalter ably opposed to any form of deficit spending. I believe in the rights of the states to establish their own educational system, one not to be disturbed by the federal government but since the Con gress has invaded the field of taxation which rightfully be longs to the States and has thereby deprived the Stages of many sources of revenue, I be lieve the Congress should now provide a direct annual grant to the several States for pub lic school purposes witfc no conditions or limitations attach ed thereto. I state now, as I stated two years ago, I am op posed to the uniform system of education recently proposed by the Truman commission because when all of the people in a nation are trained to think alike, a totalitarian system of government follows as was the case in Germany. I announce to the people of the Third Congressional Dis trict, whom I have had the honor of serving for the past two years, that I am still dedi cated to the above principles and if elected, shall continue to adhere to them with all the ability I can command. It shall be my purpose to discuss the above principles and other problems confronting the peo ple today as frankly and earn estly as possible during the ap proaching campaign. Dillon, Apr. 26.—A Wl (Red) Bethea, Dillon County farmer, announced today that he will be a candidate for state com missioner of agriculture in the July 11 Democratic primary. J. Roy Jones, the incumbent commissioner, already has an nounced for renomination.
