ORDER OFFICE TELEPHONE 911 — 430 Facts Are Given In 1949 Cottonseed Purchase Program Newberry County cotton growers may now sell their cot tonseed to the Commodity Cre dit Corporation under the US Department of Agriculture’s cot tonseed purchase program at $46.50 per ton, Mr. J. W. Abrams, Chairman of the coun ty PMA Committee, said today. The new purchase program is designed as a supplement to the farm storage loan program now in effect and to support prices of 1949 cottonseed at levels reflecting 90 percent of parity, Mr. Abrams said. Purchases will be made di rect from fa;, mere by the local PMA Committee on delivery of eligible cottonseed at a central storage place, in the town of Newberry, located on Vincent street and formerly occupied by Spotts Wholesale Grocery Com pany. The purchase program was initiated recently as an emer gency measure for the 1949 crop only. Many farmers were unable to get storage facilities to take advantage of the loan program which was first an nounced the last week in July, because it was quite late in the season. As a result reports in dicated that many were hav ing to sell their cottonseed at less than support price. The puprchase program is designed to help correct this situation and to give farmers more ade quate price protection on their eligible seed this year, Mr. Abrams explained. The following is a general summary of how the CCC Cot tonseed Purchase Program works in the county. 1. Farmers will deliver their cottonseed, if they wish to sell them under the purchase pro- p-am, to the central warehouse in Newberry where they will be accepted if they have a safely storable moisture con tent. 2. The base price upon which payments to farmers will be determined will be $49.50 per ton (90 percent of August 1st parity and the same as the rate under the cottonseed loan pro gram). From this base price, $3.00 per ton will be deducted to offset storage service and other costs which the farmer must assume -eunder the stan dard storage loan program and which must be borne by farm ers who sell their cottonseed under the purchase program. Thus, the net price to be paid farmers for acceptable cotton seed will be $46.50 pper ton. Mr. Abrams stated that all ginners in the county were con tacted Friday, October 14, and given an opportunity to pur chase cottonseed for the ac count of Commodity Credit Corporation for the reason that they were now paying $46.50 per ton for their individual ac counts.
