The unimaginative brother of a
well-known artist was somewhat
jealous of the way people talked in
glowing pnrases of his brother but
never gave him a thought. He had
reached the stage where he paid
scant attention to conversations
concerning his brother.
He nearly went to sleep one day
as an enthusiastic admirer of the
artist raved on and on about his
paintings.
“But what I can’t understand,”
said the admirer, “is how two
brothers can be so dissimilar.
You’re so tall and your brother is
quite short, isn’t he?”
“Yes,” agreed the brother, “he
frequently i.i.”
Whistler, the famous English
artist, was complimented on his
paintings by an admiring lady.
“Yes,” she said, “I was re
minded of some of your works
when I walked along a river bank
the other day. The air was so clean
that the trees and foliage lookeif
as if you had painted them.”
“That’s true,” he remarked,
“even Nature is beginning to get
on to the trick.”
An amateur painter called in a
doctor friend of his to look at a
painting he had just completed. It
showed a man in the last stages of
a terrible struggle against death.
After the good doctor had spent
about ten minutes inspecting it
thoroughly the artist asked him
what he thought of it.
“Looks like pneumonia to me,”
replied the doctor.
Candles
If a candle is a little too small
for the holder, you can make it
firm by dipping the holder—pro
vided it’s metal—into piping hot
water for a few minutes to get it
hot before inserting the candle.

Trimming Wicks
In trimming the wick of an oil
lamp or oil heater, the handiest
thing to use is a single-edge razor
blade. With oil heater 'vicks, saw
straight across, and use the metal
clips in the wick as a guide.

Turpentine in Cleaning
When an article is cleaned with
turpentine, the odor often lingers
on; but you can hasten its de
parture by steaming the garment
in the bathroom while the hot
shower is running and then airing
it outdoors for one full day.

Preventing Bust
To prevent the tub of your
washing machine from rusting,
pour a cupful of soda chips or
soap powder over the bottom of
it when the day’s washing is done.
This helps to discourage rust, but
the soap isn’t wasted. When the
next wash day comes, just pour
hot water over the soap for a new
batch of suds.
