THE NEWBERRY SUN
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 1
Candidate for Alderman Ward 1
GEORGE W. MARTIN
A New Era?
I believe that everyone will agree that Newberry
has one short-coming.
,We have a city of 10,000 good people, hundreds of
fine homes, plenty of electric power, good water and
climate, and dozens of other assets.
BUT—we DO NOT have enough work to keep all
our people busy. We need more mahufacturing plants
and we need them badly.
With the coming of the City Manager, I believe
Newberry faces a new era of prosperity. I believe
our people will all work together to get more things
for Newoerry. I believe there will be a new spirit
all around.
OITY COUNCIL can do much toward bringing
in new payroll and I want to toe a member of the next
•Council so that I can work toward this end.
We cannot, however, get new industries by simply
ASKING for them. We must offer inducements; we
must make it attractive for plants to locate here. And
we must not forget the plants we now have, little and
big. These should have our encouragement. If they
are prosperous here, others will hear of it.
We cannot toe happy unless we are working; we
cannot feed our families and buy some of the luxuries
to which every person is entitled. We cannot educate
our children unless we can exchange our labor for dol-
If you want a man on Council who will work hard
for pew industries vote for GEORGE W. MARTIN
for Alderman from Ward 1.
lars.
<, GEORGE MARTIN is in a position to give all
time necessary to the job of Alderman, and he will
not only give it his time, but his thought as well.
Aldermen are elected at large this year—all voters
vote for all aldermen. I appeal to you to consider
my candidacy favorably, and in return I pledge you
my very best for a bigger, better Newberry.

Why Wiseman?
That’s a fair question and here are some of the
reasons his friends give in answer:
Jimmie Wiseman is by nature a friendly man and
the most humble citizen will get every consideration
at his hands.
He goes into office absolutely free of any ties to
any man or woman; therefore, he is free to do what
he thinks best for all the people.
He is a successful business man, having operated
a hotel here for 18 years. He has acquired some
property and knows what it means to pay taxes.
He is a strong advocate of the City Manager plan
which gets under way here the first of October; He
will give our city manager every support and encour
agement.
He realizes that Newberry needs more industry
and has in mind certain plans to try to induce more
manufacturers to Newberry. Plants are coming
South by the hundreds and he wants Newberry to
have its share of this payroll.
He has always been active in Bond drives, Red
Cross drives and many others. He has given of his
time and means to many causes designed for the good
of our people. We find him entirely unselfish.
He is interested in our young people, having for
many years been one of the best friends of the Boy
Scouts.
Jimmie Wiseman loves Newberry and its people
and now seeks to serve them in an official capacity.
He considers it an honor to toe the Mayor of our good
town.
We, his friends, assure you that you will never
(have reason to regret your vote for Mr. Wiseman for
Mayor.
