THE NEWBERRY SUN, NEWBERRY. S. C,
Marines, Car Get Lift
From Driver of Truck
Cherry Point ; N.C. — Three
Brooklyn Marine Reservists re
cently enroute to the Marine Corps
air station here, for two weeks of
active duty training, saved them
selves 150 miles of the long drive
when a big-hearted truck driver
gave them and their car a lift from
Baltimore to Norfolk on his auto
mobile delivery trailer.
The men, all attached to VMF-
132 of Floyd Bennett field, Brook
lyn, N. Y., met the trailer driver
in a diner outside of Baltimore
and told him about the trouble
they were having with their car,
a 1931 sedan and hoping it would
hold together for the trip.
The trailer driver suggested
*thev run their car up on a grease
rack in a nearby service station
and run it on his empty trailer.
This was done and the Marines
settled down for the long ride.
They are now trying to figure out
a way of hitching another ride—
with the car—when they are ready
to return to Brooklyn upon com
pletion of training.

Let ef Bull (Whip)
The legislators of a western state
were holding a banquet. A newly
elected member, an old cowman
who had been persuaded by neigh
bors to run for office, was ill at
ease, and a little irked at the in
cessant chatter going on around
him.
Finally a buxom woman, whose
husband was a professional poli
tician, turned to the old cowman.
“You had better vote for my
husband’s new bill,” she warned
loudly. "After all, you know he’s
the party whip.”
"I know,” said the cowman-sen
ator. “But there’s one big trouble
with whips. They’re often cracked.”

FIRST AID to the

“Please, lady,” said the tramp,
“the doctor has given me this
bottle of medicine, but I have
nothing to take it with.”
“Surely,” replied the kind old

glass of water.”
“No, thank you, madam. I
guess I can get along without those.

Through Channels, Please
A London newspaper says that a
recently discharged soldier, who
had unpleasant memories of his
military experience, took the first
opportunity after resuming his
civilian clothes to write to his for
mer colonel:
"Sir: After what I have suffered
for the last two years, it gives me
much pleasure to tell you and the
army to go to ” a place where
only the wicked are consigned.
In due course he got his reply:
“Sir: Any suggestion or inquir
ies concerning the movement of
troops must be entered on army
form 2132, a copy of which I en
close."

QUESTION: Is there anything
1 could put on my aluminum out-'
door clothes line so that black!
smudges can be kept off the 1
clothes? Even after thorough wip
ing it is possible to rub ■“black”
ott the line.
ANSWER: After thorough
cleaning, rinsing and drying, give
the line a coat of good spar var-
< nish. To get an even coat, saturate
a piece of cheesecloth with the
varnish and g/ipe it on the wire.
Since there will be a great deal
of friction, the varnish gradually
will wear off, and the treatment
must be repeated. Instead of all
this fussing, why not use a good
cord clothesline, to be taken down
and put away when not in use?

First American Railroad
The first road of rails in the
United States is said to have been
a short inclined track used as
early as 1795 to convey brick and
other clay products from kilns on
Beacon Hill, Boston, to a street
below. In 1807, Silas Whitney built
a short railway at the same loca
tion. The rails were of wood.

Even So
"There isn’t so much differ

“Oh, yes, there is,” insisted
Mr. Smith. “A man wants all

Mr. Smith, "wants everything
