KIRKLAND-REYKOLDS
BETROTHAL ANNOUNCED
Mr. and Mrs. Randolph With
ers Kirkland announce the en
gagement of their daughter,
Mary Richardson, to William
Cumberland Reynolds, Jr., of
Birmingham, Ala. The wedding
is to take place August 26 at
St. Lukes Episcopal church in
Newberry.
Miss Kirkland was graduated
from the Newberry high school
and attended Winthrop College.
For the past three years she
has been associated with the
Retail Credit company in At
lanta, Ga. Her mother was
the former Miiss Louise Rich
ardson of Atlanta and she is
the granddaughter of Mrs.
Thomas J. Kirkland of Cam
den.
The bridegroom is the son
of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Reynolds
of Birmingham. He was gradu
ated from Tulane where he
was a member of the Sigma
Chi fraternity. He received his
master of science degree from
Georgia Tech. He served as
an ensign in the last war.
Mrs. Mary West, who has
been ill at her home on East
Main street for the past two
weeks, was reported Thursday
morning to be some . better.
(Mrs. West has been ill since
the middle of June. She is in
her 87th year.
WEEK OF CAMPING IS
EXCITING 4-H MEMBERS
The 4-H Club members of
Newberry county are becoming
excited over the prospects of
a week of camping at Camp
Bob Cooper. This will be a
new experience for the Club
members so they have much to
look forward to. This Camp is
on the grounds of the Santee
Cooper project. The small
buildings which accomodate 4
people are the ones that were
used by the workmen on the
project. Other buildings have
been added so that the camp
is quite comfortable. The cam
pers will get their mail care of
Camp Bob Cooper, Manning, S.
Carolina.
Besides the staff at Camp
Bob Cooper the Campers will
be in charge of Miss Ethel
Counts, Home Demonstration
Agent, Miss Jane Winn, Asst.
Home Dem. Agent, W. A. Ridg
eway, Asst. County Agent, and
several men and women local
leaders. i
Chester county will share the
camp with Newberry county
the week of August 1-5.
A DAUGHTER
Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Holson-
back is celebrating the birth of
a daughter, Kathrine Anne,
born at the County Hospital
Thursday, July 14. Mrs. Holson-
back, the forner Inez Goodman
and daughter are doing nicely.

by the traffic laws of the City of Newberry.
Special warning is given to motorists to
observe the speed limits as appearing on
signs entering the city limits.
Attention is also called to the law pro
hibiting motor vehicles in the city limits
without mufflers.
These laws will be strictly enforced so
the public is warned accordingly.

ANNUAL HOMECOMING AT
CROSS ROADS CHURCH
The Cross Roads Baptist
church at Chappells will hold
its annual homecoming Sunday
the 31st. All former members,
former pastors, and friends are
invited to attend.
The morning services will be
at 11 o’clock. The afternoon
program is peing planned.Plans
for the restoration of this his
toric old building will be dis
cussed at the meeting.

and two daughters, Eva and
Patricia are spending two
week’s vacation at the Isle of
Palms Charleston, as guests of
Mr. and Mrs. Guy Whitener.
Mrs. George P. Boozer was
admitted to the Newberry Hos
pital Tuesday morning and un
derwent a major operation. She
is reported to be doing nicely
her friends will be glad to
know.
Mr. and Mrs. R. H. West of
Louisville, Ky arrived in the
city Wednesday to spend a few
days in the home of Mr. Wests
mother, Mrs. Mary West on E.
Main street.

PRAISED AT MEETING
The Newberry Volunteer Fire
Department is being twice hon
ored within two weeks. The
Civic League gave the / Fire
men’s banquet Wednesday p.m.
at the Newberiy Community
hall at which time an appro
priate program was presented
in high praise of the depart
ment and it work.
The main speaker was Dr.
James C. Kinard, of Newberry
college. Mrs. J. H. Summer
presided. Hon. Eugene Blease,
a member of the department,
brought greetings and gave a
history of the Community hall
in which the banquet was held.
The firemen are looking for
ward to the second banquet
which is scheduled to be serv
ed by the Lion’s Club of New
berry on Tuesday night, at the
same hall.
