Cousins Builds
Two Fish Ponds
By E. E. Epting
Ira T. Cousins has recently
completed the construction of
two fish ponds on his farm in
the Hartford Community. These
ponds will be stocked with
1,000 blue gill bream and 100
big mouth bass per acre.
"Federal Hatcheries furnish
fingerlings for stocking ponds
through the Newberry Soil
Conservation District.
Cooperators with the District
must build and fertilize the
ponds according to specifica
tions to be eligible for this ser
vice.
Burton and Hugh Lewis are
justly proud of their one acre
forest thinning plot near Col
ony Church. They did this
work after school hours during
the winter and early spring
months. The timber stand has
been improved and the boys
have pulpwood for sale.
Frank Senn has built terraces
cn 20 acres with his tractor-
tiller farm equipment. Mr.
Senn’s farm is on the Belfast
road near th e Laurens County
line.
Last year Robert C. Mays of
the Mt. Bethel Garmany section
seeded four acres of Class III
land to sericea. The late frost
this spring killed the early
growth but it has again grown
to five inches in height. Mr.
Mays seeded an additional 10
acres this spring and has a
splendid stand. He will use
the sericea for erosion control
and soil improvement. It can
also be used for hay, grazing
or seed production.
