■'mm PAGE EIGHT SEEM ALONG ROADSIDE (Continued from page 1) try to grow good grass, it is not as easy as you thought it would be. The way it persis ted in your crop's, you doubt less thought all you had to do to have good grass i^as to just let it alone. But that is not the case. That cultivated land, where you fought grass so, had fer tilizer on it. And it was pre pared well and worked good. We now know that it takes all of those things too to grow good grass, just like it takes them to grow good crops. We have thousands of acres of winter grasses and clovers planted in all manner of ways. And we have even more thou sands of acres of permanent pastures planted and seeded in various ways. The S^ate Pas ture Committee of experiment station, extension, and SCS is studying all of these. County agents and SCS workers are conducting tours to see these efforts towards growing good grass. Farm experience and scientific findings are being V jd into practical know- icdgc mat will aid us in grow ing grass. Real grass! Grass the yeai around, that is mak ing the livestock future of thjs country Ult a bit southward. power for progress comes? We can’t walk among the stars except in fancy. But on the wings of imagination we can go anywhere. And it does us good, when we get our feet back on the ground again. I told you last fall about the good many thousand acres of shatter-resistant soybeans I saw following grain in Calhoun county. County Agent Cain says yields ran around a 30- bushel average per acre. And, “the Tall Arksoy, developed by John Wannamaker, seems to be the most popular variety. It is a shatter-resistant bean which grows upright, makes good yield, and is easy to com bine.” he says. And listen to County Agent Bryant of Lee talking: “Green fields at Christmas could be seen on many farms in Lee county, along with some nice fat livestock and poultry graz ing on the blanket of green, where in the past the same land only fed sparrows and robins.” 4 Don’t you like to take an occasional flight intp that beau tiful realm of imagination? I do. _ For is it not there that is it not from there that the creative thinking grows? And Clarendon county has start ed a 100-Bushel-Per-Acre-Corn Club. ^ _ The past year three of tlfeir farmers made it. And the 10 high ones in their contest av eraged 91.1 bushels per acre. Those earning charter mem bership in the 100 bushel club were Perry Anderson with 106.4 bushel per acre,. John Brogdon 105.2 bushels, and F. Large, well-known, AAAI Mfr. needs two men for steady, permanent work in sales, service dept., full time with no lay-offs. Forty-two men in S. C., starting green, are making more money than ever before. Perhaps you could use more money in 1949. They were turned loose in the arena. Then 40 older 4-H boys were turned loose in there too. The one that caught, hal tered and led a calf out got the calf. Those calves are being grown out for the 4-H fat stock show there this fall. The other day Carraway visited the 20 boys who got them. And 16 of them had winter grazing in addi tion to the dry feed for their calves. Growing stock right; that’s what the youngsters are learn ing by doing. “WELLS THEATRE FRIDAY AND SATURDAY CHARLES STARRETT in "Challenge of the Range" with SMILEY BURNETTE Added CONGO BILL and THREE STOOGES Comedy THE NEWBERRY SUN R I T Z THEATRE THURSDAY & FRIDAY Loretta Young, Robert Cum mings, Wendell Corey, Sam Jaffe, Douglas Dick . It is unfortunate that man’s two favorite household pets and helpers should cause the most trouble when they do hear the call of the wild. The cat and dog, turned primative, destroy those things which are impor tant to us economically, claims Bill Wolf, author of many hunt ing and fishing articles. The killer cat comes in for the major share of the blame, and is the subject of much ar gument. Defenders to the con trary, the domestic cat which is alowed to prowl at will in suburban and rural areas, and the homeless cat which turns entirely wild and lives as a beast of prey, destroy wildlife of much more value to man than the contribution they make killing a few mice. The owner who talfes tabby out to the county, to be turn ed loose, is positive it will head for the nearest farm and find a good home. They nev er find such a home. If they survive the first several grim weeks, they learn how to kill to live. They stay away from the farmhouse, where they are less than welcome. In a little time the wild has reclaimed them entirely. There is noth ing cute about them. They are miniature tigers. When the dear little kittens need food they have a varied choice—young of rabbits, quail pheasants and low nesting song birds are easy prey. Further more, they can kill the adults of all but the larger animals and birds classed as small game. If this is condemnation it is not intended for the cats, but rather for their owners who abandon them or who do not properly care for them. They seldom realize how destructive their cats can be when allowed to roam at will. There is no room for killer cats, and the hunter is justified in shooting them as he would any serious predator. The hunter spends his money to put game in the field. The cat owner contributes noth ing, not even a license fee. <r<D TTT A ••NMNt tieutmt *■ Keepsake .•’-cr ClI AMONG 71m mod desired diamond ring . . . a genuine registered Keepsake.
