FRIDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1948 THE NEWBERRY SUN By TeJ Kesting Summer is usually considered the outdoor season, but when you stop to think about it, there aren’t so many things you can do in warm weather claims Outdoor Writer Bill Wolf. He builds a pretty fair case for th e year’s labt month, j The December sportsman can’t go boating or swimming as in summer, but he still can an infinite variety of winter camp out, hike, fish, and have sports to choose from as well. And there’s some form of small game hunting to be found in almost every state. But to many, December’^ chief charm as an outdoor month is in the snows that ar rive in the northern states. They usually aren’t too severe, as they will be in January and February, and are often only light, tracking snows. Reading tracks is like reading a mystery story except that there is not always a solution. Sometimefe the clues peter out in a con fusion of tracks. The outdoors moves indoors during th enext-to-the last week this month. There is little hunting or fishing done in Christmas Week becouse it is strictly a home-arib-family affair. It takes a brave and rather heartless man to ignore his fireside at this time to go gunning or angling. However/ it also takes a brave man to bear up under some of the Christmas presents he will re ceive. The surf fisherman prabably will get a nice fly-rod reel, the bait caster an ocean-going boat rod, the upland game ghooter a pair of hip boots from someone , who saw a duck hunter so at tired. The donor will beam, expecting thanks^ and the re-1 cipient will bare his teeth in a lupine grin intended to convey thanks for something he does n’t want. The sun returns on December 21 at the beginning of the win ter solisice. but, paradoxically, this date also marks the period when the days start to get longer. It’s imperceptible at first, but the daylight increases gradually until it is noticeable toward (spring. The birth of winter also contains the seeds of its death. An other time will suit as well Just now my mind runs on England and Scotland. It was our good fortune to have John Burns as our guide through the Houses of Parliament, the Tower of London and other places of interest. (Mr. Burns told of going around London with a “Yank ee” and a Canadian. As they stood on London Bridge, Mr. Burns, with the calm assurance and modesty of the British, said, “Gentlemen, this is the London Bridge.’’ Of course Mr. Buraia was swelling with pride, though so calm. Mr. Burns assumed that everyone would realize all the implications of that—London Bridge! The Am erican, like Simon Peter, blurt ed out “Is this the Thames River?” “It is the Thames River,” said Mr. Burns. “But,” said the American, “Not the Thames River?” Yes, bir: th* Thames River.” "But, Mk\ Burns, the Thamete River I have read about?” “Sir, the Thames River you have read about.” The American looked up and down the Thames and was as much disappointed as I was when I stood by the little Marne River, in France. It loojced puny to me, about like the* Black River at Kingstree, or less. Finally, in all the bumptiousness of his Ameri canism, he asked “Have you ever seen the Missouri?” Then the Canadian came to life and asked “Have you seen the St. Lawrence?” Mr. Burns . said he backed away from those sturdy patriots and replied: “I have seen the Missouri. It is nothing but a great river of muddy water. And I have seen the Saint Lawrence, which is only a vast, swift stream. But this, gentlemen, is liquid his tory.” I repeated that in Spanish to the Rector of the University of La Libertad (Trujielo, Peru). He enjoyed it greatly—“La his- toria liquida, que tal! He chuckled.—Liquid history!! PECANS!! - PECANS!!
