This intensive ^jve-day course is offered to teaffers wishing to qualify as high school instruc tors in this field. Attendance and successful completion of this specialized course will qualify teachers to instruct stu dent groups in actual behind- the-wheel driving. Principals or Superintendents of schools interested in this program should contact James D. Brown, Supt. of Education, or write to the Extension Divi sion of the University of South Carolina. %. Singley was hos tess to the Crepe Myrtle Gar den Club on Tuesday afternoon. Sharing the pleasures of the meeting were Mrs. P. C. Sing- ley and Mrs. L. A. Black, and Mrs. J. D. Luther and Miss Pa tricia Luther came in for the social period Mrs. John Dawkins, leader, read an article entitled, “Over the Garden Fence.” For glean ings Mrs. W. A. Ballentine gave a poem, “I Know Something Good About You.” Mrs. R. H. Ruff conducted a word con test, with Mrs. E. S. Shealy scoring highest. After the business session, the members went into the hostess’ lovely garden, an^ at the out door fireplace, enjoyed a wein- er roast with all the trimmings. The hostess’ daughter, Mrs. Sheely Setzler, assisted with the refreshments. P.T.A. Meeting The September meeting of the P- T. A. was held Thurs day evening in the school au ditorium. The Rev. J. E. Fer- rin conducted the opening de votions. Mrs. B. Cornell Bc- denbaug, president, welcomed the new teachers and patrons of the new school districts com ing to Prosperity. She suggest ed the Prosperity P. T. A. taka as its theme, the theme of the National Convention of the P. T. A., “Unfinished Business— The Child and Its Future.” That said Mrs. Bedenbaugh, was the main objective of any P. T. A. After a short business session the members enjoyed a fellow ship hour in the gymnasium. Mrs. C. M. Singley led the group in several song rounds, and Mrs. H. B. Hendrix direct ed the grand march. Punch and cookies were served. - Personal Mention Mr. and Mrs. Allan A. Reigh- ley and family have moved i n - to the house on Brown street, recently vacated by Mrs. Jim Bedenbaugh. Mr. Reighley is with the State Highway De partment. Dr. and Mrs. John Moore Livingstone and baby have recently moved into the O’Neal teacherage. Mrs. Livingston is the former Miss Annie Mae Bledsoe, whose father. Rev. J. A. Bledsoe, served the Wight- man-Zion charge several years ago. Dr. Livingston has just completed a veterinarian course at State Medical College in Au burn. Ala. T. L. Milstead has come home from the Newberry Hospital where he spent several days for treatment. Miss Annie Lee Langford of Pacolet and Mrs. David Tilling- hast of Greenville were week end guests of Misses Susie and Mary Langford. Mrs. Frances Bargus of St. Petersburg, Fla. is visiting her niece and nephew, Mrs. Nancy Ward and J. S. Wheeler. Mrs. P. W. Smith left Wed nesday for a two weeks’ visit in Birmingham, Ala. Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Williams and two children, Mrs. Rudolph C. Barnes and two children of Columbia were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. W'. C. Barnes. Rev. W. D. Haltiwanger at tended “Seminary Day” at the Lutheran Seminary in Colum bia last Tuesday. Mrs. A. B. Hunt and Mrs. Joe Spotts and little son, Larry spent the weekend in Green ville. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Pugh and family of Columbia spent Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Pugh. The Rev. and Mrs. J. B. Har man are visiting their son-in- law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Riddle in Greensboro, N. C. Frank Hill, Jr. and James D. Luther, Jr. will leave this week for Citadel. Cadet Hill is entering the Freshman class while Cadet Luther is a senior. Mr. and Mrs. H. E. Counts had with them Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Bob Alexander and Mrs. Corrie McWaters of Columbia. The Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Woodle of McCrae, Ga., are guests of their daughter, Mrs. A. R. Chappell and Mr. Chap pell. Charles P. Barre of New York City is visiting his sisters Miss Kate Barre and Mrs. E. W. Werts. * Mr. and Mrs. Julian Long of Charleston; Mr. and Mrs. Otis Mills and baby of Laurens, and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Calvert and baby of Laurens spent the weekend in the home of their 1 father. Monroe Mills. They also visited their mother who is seriously ill in the Columbia Hospital. Mrs. Nancy Ward has come home from the Newberry Hos pital where she underwent an operation. Mr. and Mrs. J. Howard White and family and Miss Annette Hawkins visited Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Goff in Green wood Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. H. N. Beden- , baugh and family were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Summer in Newberry. Donal Snow of Washington, D. C. and Chapel Hill, N. C., visited in the home of J. D. Luther the first of the week. AN ORDINANCE TO PROVIDE FOR THE RAIS ING OF A REVENUE FOR THE TOWN OF NEWBERRY, SOUTH CAROLINA, BY THE LEVYING OF TAXES IN THE SAID TOWN FOR THE YEAR NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FORTY-EIGHT BE IN ORDAINED by the Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Newberry, South Car olina, in Council assembled. That for the purpose o^ rais ing revenue, and in the exer cise of the taxing power of the said Town, the following taxes are hereby levied for the fiscal year ending December 31st, 1948, upon all real and personal property within the corporate limits of the Town of New berry, South Carolina (except upon such property as is ex empt from taxation under the Constitution and laws of this State), upon the valuation thereof as assessed for taxa tion for State and County pur poses: - '(1) That a tax of nineteen (19) mills on each dollar’s worth of real and personal pro perty within the corporate limits of the Town of Newberry South Carolina, except upon such property as is exempt from taxation under the Con stitution and laws of this State), is hereby levied to de fray the ordinary expenses of the said Town of Newberry, South Carolina, for the fiscal year ending December 31sf, 1948. (2) That a tax of one (1) mill on each dollar’s worth of real and personal property within the corporate limits of the Town of Newberry, South Carolina. except upon such property as is exempt from tax ation under the Constitution and laws of this State), is here by levied for the purpose of raising a revenue to pay the interest and to create a sink ing fund for the bonded in debtedness of said town for the “Sewer Bonds,” issued in 1909. (3) That a tax of five (5) mills on each dollar’s worth of real and personal property within the corporate limits of the Town of Newberry, South Carolina, except upon such pro perty as is exempt from taxa tion under the Constitution and laws of this State), is here by levied for the purpose of raising a revenue to pay the interest on, and to create a sinking fund for. the bonded indebtedness of tne said Town for the “Street Improvement Bonds,” issued in the year 1921. (4) That a tax of two and three-fourth (2%) mills on each dollar’s worth of real and per sonal property within the cor porate limits of the Town of Newberry, South Carolina, ex cept upon such property as is exempt from taxation under tne Constitution and laws of this State), is hereby levied for thu purpose of raising a revenue to pay the interest on, and to create a sinking fund for the bonded indebtedness of the said Town for “Street Improvement Bonds,” issued in the year 1925. (5) That a tax of one-fourth 04) of a mill on each dollar’s worth of real and personal pro perty within the corporate limits of the Town of Newberry South Carolina,, except upon such property as is exempt from taxation under the Con stitution and laws of this State), is hereby levied for the purpose of raising a revenue to pay the interest on, and to crate a sinking fund for, tha bonded indebtedness of the said Town for “Water Bonds,’’ issued in the year 1925. (6) That a tax of one-fourth (14) of a mill on each dollar’s worth of real and personal pro perty within the corporate limits of the Town of Newberry South Carolina, except upon such property as is exempt from taxation under the Con stitution and laws of this State), is hereby levied for the purpose of raising a reve nue to pay the interest on, and to create a sinking fund for, the bonded indebtedness of the said Town of “Sewer Bonds,” issued in the year 1925. (7) That a tax of one and one-fourth (114) mills on each dollarls worth of real and per sonal property within the cor porate limits of the Town of Newberry, South Carolina, ex cept upon such property as is exempt from taxation under* the Constitution and laws of Statement of the ownership, management, etc. of the New berry Sun, Newberry, S. (9) That a tax of one and one-half (1%) mills on each dollar’s worth of real and per sonal property within the cor porate limits of the Town of Newberry, South Carolina, ex cept upon such property as is exempt from taxation under the Constitution and laws of this State), is hereby levied for the purpose of raising a revenue and to pay the interest on. and to create a sinking fund for, the bonded indebtedness of the said Town for “Fire De partment Improvement Bonds, issued in the year 1936. That all taxes herein levied shall be paid to the o>aid Town of Newberry, South Carolina, in good and lawful money of the United States of America between the first day of Oc tober. 1948, and the fifteenth day of December, 1943, and on any tax not paid on, or before, December 15th, 1948, a penalty of one per cent thereof shall be added and collected until December 31st, 1948, and on any tax not paid by said time, an additional penalty of one per cent shall be added and collected until January 31st, 1949. and on any tax not paid on said date, an additional pen alty of eight per cent shall be added; and for any tax not paid on or before January 31st 1949, execution will be issued according to law for the col lection of same, including all fines and penalties.
