While with the War Department for 6 years dur
ing World War II, I received intensive training as
to what can be accomplished through cooperation.
This training will stand me in good stead if elected
your supervisor, as I know the value of cooperation.
I will see to it that all county supplies are bought
on advertised bids and that everyone has an equal
chance to furnish the county upon that basis. All
supplies that can be bought in Newberry County
will be bought here.
I intend to devote my full time to the office, if
elected, and will have no stores or other personal
business to occupy my mind.
I favor a strict rotation of the road work, and if
elected will see that such a system is put into effect
and carried out in all fairness. I will be out in the
roads and see that the work is done.

Furman Sterling returned home
last week from a trip which
covered 7,797 miles and in
cluded 27 states. Traveling
west from Georgia to Califor
nia, they stopped over in Dal
las and Phoenix. In Califor
nia they traveled north from
Los Angeles through the Im
perial Valley to San Francisco,
through the giant Redwood
Forest and along the coast.
Turning east in Oregon they
visited Crater Lake. Yellow
stone Park, Mt. Rulshmore
Memorial, the Badlands, the
Indian Dells in Wisconsin, Chi
cago, and New York. There
they turned south, stopping
over in Richmond.

My Fellow Citizens:
I am deeply grateful for the splendid vote given me in the
first primary. I appreciate this expression of confidence far
more than I know how to say so.
1th as been said that during the past four years there have
been more arrests and convictions than there were during my
administration. There is nothing surprising about that for it
is what should be expected. A Study of statistics will show
that the increasing crime wave over the country during the
past few years makes it inevitable that there shall be a larger
number of arrests. What is true in Newberry County is true
all over the country. It is perfectly clear to any careful student
of current affairs that crime in the United States is on the in
crease. That is exactly the reason why Newberry County now
needs as sheriff a man who is courageous, alert and aggressive,
strongly determined to see that our laws are enforced and that
those who break them shall be punished. That is the kind of
sheriff you would have in Tom Fellers.
During the thirty-two years that end«l with my administra
tion there was not a single unlsolved murder case in Newberry
County. For more than half of that period, eighteen and a halt
years, I served either as deputy or as sheriff and so had a
share in solving these crimes. During my entire administra
tion as sheriff there was only one crime committed in which
the offenders were not brought to justice. That particular of
fense came very near the end of my term. I feel confident that
my record entitles me to say that if I had been in office a little
longer that case also would have been solved.
If you elect me again as your sheriff my deputies and I will
always be on the job. When a call comes to my office I will
not wait until I can find a deputy to send. I will go myself,
just ais I did when I was sheriff before. Nobody has ever
been able to say truthfully that Tom Fellers was ever afraid
to answer the call of duty.
Criminals work day and night. An alert officer of the law
mulst be subject to call at all times. That is exactly what I
propose to do as your sheriff. No matter when a call comes,
any hour of day or night, I will answer promptly. You have
the right to expect just that of your sheriff.
Let me urge each of you as your patriotic duty to cast your
ballot in this second primary.
I am making this campaign strictly on my own merit. If on
Augulst 24th you elect me I pledge to you a sober, courteous
and efficient administration so that the citizens of Newberry
County will have every reason to be proud of the fact that Tom
Fellers is again their sheriff.
