worn out like old school ties,
but the person who discards
tradition will be a better fisher

If you’re of the wet-your
hands-before-unhooking a small
fish school, you had better go
back to school. The truth is
that wet hands probably injure
more hooked fish than any
other factor, except bait taken
deep in the throat.
A wet hand increases the dif
ficulty of holding a fish. The
angler applies more pressure
and is apt to injure more vital
internal organs. A dry hand
helps hold a squirming fish,
with less pressure.
As part of an experiment con
ducted by the New Mexico de
partment of fisheries to deter
mine the chances of survival of
undersized fish released after
being caught four anglers took,
then freed 232 trout. Of that
number only 4.3 per cent died.
Sixty were caught on barb
less flies and were handled
with care (three died); 51 were
taken on barbed flies and no
special care was used in re
moving them from the hook
(three died); 60 were taken on
bait and moderate care was ex
ercised (two died); 61 were
caught with bait and were al
lowed to lie in the sand and
dirt a few minutes before being
removed from the hooks (two
died).
As a result of these experi
ments it wafe assumed that re
leased fish will survive under
normal conditions if average
care is exercised and no vital
organ is injured.

Whitmire Educator Honored
At the conclusion of the
eighth grade commencement
exercises of the Whitmire ju
nior high school, R. C. Lake,
superintendent of the Whitmire
schools, was. honored when Mar
vin E. Abrams, state senator
from Newberry county and for
mer trustee of the schools, pre
sented the trustees with a por
trait of Mr. Lake. Mrs. Mar
jorie Lambent Wilson, a gradu
ate in the class of 1942, com
missioned an artist to paint the
portrait from a snapshot of
Mr. Lake.
In acknowledging the honor,
Mr. Lake said, “If my life and
service has been of value, this
tribute amply repays me.”
There were 62 junior high
graduates who presented a pro
gram of folk dances and
songs, entitled “Spring Festival.”
James H. Abrams made the
award of certificates to 'gradu
ates and honor students at the
close of the program.
The portrait of Mr. Lake is
to be placed in the hall of the
high school as a reminder of
Mr. Lake’s 2 years of service
as superintendent of the Whit
mire schools. During these
years, the school system has
made geat progress under his
leadership.

Q: I am a World War II
veteran, and would like to
know how much an attorney
who represents me in my claim
for compensation or pension
against the Veterans Adminis
tration is permitted to charge?
A: If an attorney is admitted
to practice before the VA he
may receive $10 in an original
claim or $2 in a claim for in
crease in compension or pen
sion, provided the claim is al
lowed. These fees are paid
by VA and deducted from the
monetary benefit awarded the
claimant.
Q: I have been granted ad
mission to a Veterans Admin
istration domiciliary home and
now would like to know if it
is possible for me to take my
wife with me to stay at the
Home?
A: No. The law does not
permit the wives of servicemen
to be admitted to any domi
ciliary home of the Veterans
Administration. ,
Q: How do I calculate' the
period of eligibility time con
sumed while I am taking a
correspondence course under
the G-I Bill?
A: One-fourth of the elapsed
time in following your corres
pondence course will be charged
against your period of enti
tlement.
Q: If I am hospitalized in
a Veterans Administration Hos
pital, must the benefits from
my Hospitalization insurance
policy be assigned to VA?
A: If treatment is rendered
for a nonservice-connected dis
ability, the amount of the poli
cy that provides for hospital
expenses must be assigned to
Veterans Administration. If the
policy provides for stipulated
amounts for the period of dis
ablement, it is not necessary
that it be assigned.
