School started again today
(Monday) after being closed for
several days on account of the
bad roads.
Mrs. W. P. Hayes and Mrs.
Gordon Runquist spent Friday
afternoon in Ninety Six.
Mr. and Mrs. O. O. Williams
and Sara, were spend-the-week-
end guests of Mr. and Mrs. L.
E. Werts. The Williams are
living at Huntersville, N. C.
Mrs. McFay Long of Lake
Providence, La., has returned
home after spending several
weeks here with her daughter,
Mrs. J. F. Scurry.
W. A. Webb spent the week
end in Columbia.
Elizabeth Keith, Chester, was
at home for a few days during
the past week.
We are glad Mrs. Ralph Lan
caster and sister, Miss Viola
Gamer are able to be out again
after their accident a few days
ago.
Mrs. Carlton Coleman and
Mrs. Garrett were visiting in
Greenwood Monday.
Mrs. Nell Farmer and child
ren were visiting C. B. Pitts in
Greenwood over the weekend.
M. L. Connelly is back home
from Newberry county hospi
tal and is doing nicely.
Peggy Puckett is improving
at the Greenwood hospital.
Edith Bruce was in Green
wood Friday afternoon.
Mrs. Cecil Dominick was a
Newberry visitor during the
past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Marvin K. Carl
son were at home ovter the
weekend.
Miss Frances Webb, Aiken,
spent the weekend at home.
Claude Sharpe, Furman uni
versity, Greenville, was visiting
his family this weekend.
Mr. and Mrs. Grover Parnell
were shopping in Newberry Sat
urday.
Miss Johnnie Blackmon, was
hostess to a Valentine party
Saturday evening. Several of
the young people from Ninety-
Six were down for the party.
The Valentine theme was car
ried out in the games and re
freshments that followed. The
younger set had a wonderful
time.

Observe Week For
Crime Prevention
Exchange clubs in towns and
cities throughout the nation are
sponsoring local observances of
National Crime Prevention
Week from February 15 to 21,
in a campaign to acquaint the
public with the need for great
ly increased, year-around crime
prevention activities, it was an
nounced today by James Ab
rams, president of the local ex
change group.
This will be an annual ob
servance during the first full
calendar week, starting Sunday,
after Lincoln’s birthday anni
versary, he added, and it is ex
pected it will become an event
as widely known, for example,
as National Fire Prevention
Week.
Charles E. Bowers has been
appointed General Chairman of
the local program. “Crime is in
creasing at such an alarming
rate throughout the Nation that
it has become our most threat
ening internal problem,” he
said today. “The National Ex
change club has made sponsor
ship of National Crime Preven
tion Week a major project, and
outstanding law enforcement
officials are agreed that such
a nation-wide observance will
do much to alert the public of
the dangers of the situation.”
It has been estimated that
there are from four to five
million criminals in the United
States, and according to official
records a serious crime is
committed somewhere in the
nation approximately every 18
seconds. During 1946, the last
year for which complete offi
cial records are available, there
were more persons aged 21 ar
rested throughout the country
than persons of any other single
age group. During the two
preceding years, age 17 pre
dominated in arrests.

In compliance with the law,
the Treasurer of Newberry
County has issued in the name
of the State, tax executions
against defaulting taxpayers of
Newberry County to the Tax
Collector thereof. By virtue of
the said tax executions, the
Tax Collector of Newberry
County is directed and com
manded to seize and take pos
session of so much of the de
faulting taxpayer’s estate, real
or personal, or both, to raise a
sum of money sufficient to cov
er delinquent taxes of taxpay

charges thereon, and he will,
