Remarkable Guess
I N THE middle of the night
Pete was awakened by the ring
ing of the telephone. It was his
partner, Harry, calling.
"Come down to the store quick!”
Harry urged. “Something has hap
pened!”
“What’s the trouble?” asked Pete.
"Can’t tell you over the tele
phone,” answered Harry. "Come on
down!"
Business hadn’t been any too good
lately, and Pete had been worrying
about a lot of unpaid bills that were
piling up. But the partners lately
had been discussing ways and
means of improving their condition,
and if this was what he thought it
was, their worries soon would be
over. He made haste to verify his
surmise.
Half way down to the store, Pete’s
car was overtaken by a traffic cop.
"What’s the rush, Bud?" the
officer demanded. "Do you think
you’re going to a fire?”
“I think so!" gasped Pete. “But
how in the world did you know?"
Doctor—Did you take that box of
pills I gave you?
Patient—Yes, but I don’t feel any
better. I guess the lid hasn’t opened
ye?.
Why Doctors Go Nuts
As the psychiatrist started to
write up his case history, the patient
slid behind a screen and began
dressing.
"You know, doctor, you’ve
changed,” he said. “You used to
nave thick black hair and now
you’re bald. You were a stocky,
ruddy - complexioned hnan before.
Now you’re so thin and pale. I’m
surprised. Dr. Crumpley.”
"But I’m not Dr. Crumpley," re
plied the astonished physician.
“So,” the patient called gleefully,
"you’ve even changed your name.”
A BLASE AGE
"Do yoa notice how the ex
clamation mark is being discard
ed?"
“Xe»—but why is It?”
"Well, it’s just that people
aren’t surprised at anything
these days.”
Use Turpentine
An artist, out sketching the coun
tryside, ran across a quaint rural
character and said to him, “I’ll give
you a dollar if you’ll let me paint
you.”
The character didn’t reply right
away but picked up a blade of grass
and began chewing on it.
"It’s easy money,” the artist
prompted, reaching for his billfold.
• “That ain’t it,” the fellow replied.
“I was just wondering how I would
get the paint off afterwards.”
JDST DITCHING IT?
A man who owned a dilapidated
motor car took it to a garage for the
night. He was shocked when the
proprietor told him the fee would be
$4.
“Why $4?” he asked. "I shall
come for It In the morning."
"Ah," said the garage proprietor,
“that’s just it. Will you come?”
Relaxing
There was a great commotion at
Hollywood and Vine. A well-dressed
man was running down the street
shouting, "No, No, No! I don’t like
it No. No, No!” over and over
again.
Finally a policeman came up and
said, "Here, here what’s going on?”
"It’s all right, officer,” said the
man. “I’m a Yes-man on a holi
day!” /
Telltale Evidence
“No, no!” said the mothei- hast
ily, as the bride started to cover her
pantry shelves with newspapers.
“Leftover wallpaper, brown paper,
paper bags, if you like—anything
but newspapers!”
“Why?” demanded the bride.
"Do you want everybody to know
when you cleaned your shelves
last?” inquired the experienced,!
housewife.
Back Talk
The six-year-old came home from
school to tell the events of her
school-day world. Among other
things, she breathlessly related that
she had a long conversation with her
teacher.
"Just what did you say?" asked
her mother.
The little lady proudly announced:
"I said ‘uh-huh’ twice."
