Except for the hour Cliff Gra
ham spent chewing his finger
nails during the rain last Thurs
day, I think everyone was ex
ceptionally pleased with New
berry's Christmas parade. Al
though we were told in advance
about the number of floats,
units, etc., to be in the parade,
somehow it was larger and
much prettier than I expected.
I’m glad I wasn’t on the com
mittee to judge the floats—
they were all so attractively
and so appropriately decorated
that is must have been hard to

arrive at a decision. The Am
erican Legion and Auxiliary
float which took first prize for
clubs and organizations was cer
tainly outstanding. I under
stand most credit for planning
that float goes to Mrs. James
Leavell, with members of both
the legion and auxiliary work
ing hard to put it together. In
the parade, the float made a
good showing with the pretty
red and white base, topped
with symbols of the legion and
auxiliary in a “bass drum” ar
rangement, and “decorated” by
Misses Evelyn Leavell and Mari
lyn Whitener of the Legion Aux
iliary, and Pete Parrott and
Bill Armfield of the Legion
carrying the flags.
In the commercial group, the
McSwain funeral home took
the blue ribbon, with their float
_f a miniature church. It was
an attractive float, and symbolic
of the spiritual significance of
the holiday which we are at
times apt to forget in all the
celebrating. The junior high
school float, winner of the
school group, also showed 1 hat
much thought had been given to
it’s design and construction.
Miss Peggy Sue Hutchinson
made a charming “Miss Merry
Christmas” and the high school
float on which she rode with
her attendants drew a round of
applause from the crowd gath
ered to witness the parade.

which made the parade a suc

vertised annual public meeting
in the Court house. All these
things can be easily done and
they would, or should, promote
better local government.
In general the fault is cur’s;
we want too much at public ex
pense and we want it NOW.
We need in every County and
town an organized group of mil
itant citizens, resolved to com
bat the trend of Increasing ex
travagance.
I may add that the proposed
budget should be published be
fore adopted. A little more no
tice and information to the
public would be a wise invest
ment of public funds.
