A new Insect killer, described in an As sociated Press release as “pos sibly an overall single weapon for man in his battle against food pests. . DDT may be powerful, but ac cording to reports, this new in secticide, known as “thiophos 3422” Is from five to 25 times more powerful than DDT. 1 knew there were plenty of plant pests to make farmers grey before their time—but didn’t realize just how many un til 1 read this story. If you have red mites in your apples, borers in your com, aphids in your po tatoes—well, better get a sup ply of T-3422. In tests made thus far, the new Insecticide kills the European red mite and other insects that damage apples; the corn borer, the potato aphid, the cabbage and cotton aphid, the Mexican bean beetle, bean leafhopper, bean aphids, onion thrips and grasshoppers. “En couraging results” have been obtained against the apple cod dling moth, the grape berry moth and mealy bug, and the corn ear worm, and promising results against the cherry fruit fly, tomato hornworm, tomata flea beetle, the cotton red spid er, the tabacco fie* beetle, the tototcco hornworm, grass dag gers and the Japanese beetle. More poison in the .ir—this time not T-3422, but “Fortified Red Squill" ... to be used to rid Newberry of rats. I was sur prised to see in a report from the county agent’s office that rats cost the people of Newber ry county an estimated 9200,000 a year. An “eliminate rats” campaign will be carried on dur ing the month of December, and Fortified Red Squill may be se cured from the county agent’s office if your order is in by Sat urday.
