PREPAREDNESS STRESSED

sion,. that is also what they want
‘ but if we have the strength they
have, we have a better chance of
preventing a catistrophe.”
Congressman Dom placed the
blame for World wars I and II
in Washington, saying, “One
thing I think caused World war
I and World war II was America
herself—her own weakness in
vited that kind of conduct on the
part of aggressor countries. 1
put the blame in Washington.”
It is Mr. Dorn’s opinion that
the sole hope for world peace is
the United Nations, and that
the DN should stay organized,
with or without Russia. In order
to back up United Nations, he
feels that the United States
should stay prepared.
The high prices in the United
States are our greatest threat to
day, stated Mr. Dorn, who feels
that Americans need the same
spirit of sacrifice evidenced dur
ing the war to bring down high
living costs. “There are a lot of
people. in America who do not
care about democracy,” he said.
“If they could go to Washington
on a depression, they would do
ft” the speaker declared.
Speaking of the four billion
dollar loan to Great Britian, he
said, “I am told she got the
money because her women and
children were starving. Two
hundred million of it was spent
for whiskey, 200 million for tob
acco, and 150 million for motion
pictures.” Mr. Dorn is of the op
inion that neither the Marshall
plan, nor any other plan for the
monetary aid of Europe, should
be put into effect until inventor
ies are made of money already
spent in this manner.
Mr. Dorn made no direct ref
erence to the charge of “war
mongering” made against him
by Vishinsky; nor to the Rus
sian’s refusal to enter into public

couldn’t persuade him to confirm

Mr. Williams gave a brief re
port on the national VFW en
campment held in Cleveland,
Ohio, recently. He stated that
the convention passed a resolu
tion calling for the passage of a
bill to give all veterans a pension
when they attain the age of 65.
Mr. Williams said that the S.
C. delegation proposed and had
passed, a resolution asking Con
gress to appropriate funds where
by markers would be furnished
to the families of veterans who
are buried overseas, and whose
bodies are not to be brought back
to this country.
Advocating a strong armed
force for America, Mr. Williams
pointed out that Russia has 300
combat divisions, while we have
only three on European soil, and
and only claims to have 10 div
isions in this country.
“The day war is declared for
World war III” the speaker said,
“is he day we must be in the
front ranks. The atom bomb is
our only superiority over the
Red,” he said.
“Congress should appropriate
money enough to make the army
attractive so that men would join
it as a profession,” Mr. William;
said. “We should have univer
sal military training. I have
never before believed in forced
training in time of peace, but it
is the only way to keep up our
strength.”

No one minded particularly, ex

said his only regret was that the
post couldn’t invite the public to
attend, but there just wasn’t room
in the VFW Hut to accommodate
anymore than the VFW members,
their wives, and members of the
Whitmire, Goldville and Green

the meeting . . .

thought those kids played a good
game, even though they let Aik

and win the game.

The lighting system at the field
is good, and the bleachers on the
sidelines are a great improve
ment over tne stadium, for foot
ball purposes. Those bleachers,
by the way, were jammed—
seems that most everybody turn

stadium and standing along the
sideline.
