SALE OF RUTHERFORD SCHOOL LOT The estate of the late Honor able George S. Mower will sell at public outcry to the highest bidder on salesday in July (the 7th day of the month), 1947, be fore the Courthouse door at Newberry, South Carolina, at 11:00 o’clock A. M., the lot of land known as the Rutherford School District lot, situate in Rutherford School District, New berry County, containing two (2) acres, more or less, bounded by the old Ashford Ferry Road and lands of J. A. Felker, and which is traversed by the new State highway from Newberry to Strother. This lot of land was given to Rutherford School Dist rict by Mr. Mower so long as the same was used for school purposes. Rutherford school having been abandoned, the property is now owned by Mr. Mower’s estate. The lot has an excellent well and some valuable timber thereon. TERMS OF SALE: Cash. The purchaser will be required to deposit immediately when the property is bid in 25% of the purchase price, and the balance will be payable within ten days on delivery of deed. Purchaser will pay for the execution of deed, revenue stamps, recording fee and taxes for the year 1947. In case of non-compliance with terms of sale, the purchase will forfeit the deposit money and the premises will be resold on salesday in August, 1947. J27, Jy4c NOTICE OF ELECTION Pursuant to the provisions of section 5330 of the code of laws of South Carolina for 1942, as amended by an act of the Gen eral Assembly of 1947 relating to the method and manner in which school districts in New berry County may levy special taxes for school purposes, an election is ordered to be held in the new court house in School District No. 1 on Tuesday, July 22, between the hours of 8:00 A. M. and 4:00 P. M., to deter mine whether an additional tax levy of fifteen (15) mills shall be levied on the property of said school district and to deter mine whether the present eight (8) mill levy for the retirement of bonds shall be retained for general school purposes upon the retirement of such school bonds. The taxes so levied will be used to make repairs to school build ings, to meet the increased cost of fuel and school supplies, to provide additional school facili ties, to enlarge the educational program, and to provide supple ments to teachers’ salaries. The election shall be conduct ed according to general election rules and only such residents as return real or personal property for taxation and present a regis tration certificate and a 1946 tax receipt shall be entitled to vote. Jne 27, Jly 4, 11,18c A BIT OF SHOPPINS IN PANAMA Naval Reservists on a training cruise of the TJSS Wisconsin spend part of their liberty ashore in Colon, Republic of Panama, selecting presents for the folks back home. They are among 600 Reservists from the Third, Fourth, and Ninth Naval Districts recalled to active duty, voluntarily, for two weeks of training aboard the “Wisky.” The cruises give the Reserve sailors a chance to learn of the latest developments aboard this mighty warship. As a part of the Wisconsin cruises there are two days of liberty in Panama for sightseeing and shopping. Many of the men bring back perfumes, lingerie, alligator skin luggage, white shirts, summer suits ai:d other items which are obtainable at prewar prices. Podlesak, Janesville plant manager, look on. "FLEAS ON DOGS" Mark Twain once said every dog should have some fleas just to keep him from realizing too often that he is a dog. Then, too, it may be said that every dog should have some fleas some of the time, at least, just to remind him of the fact that he is a dog. Popular elections are not so very far off. We should have some candidates who can get by without fleas—that they may not itch and scratch not, and are not reminded of their past. Some mighty good men arc sometimes defeated for public office; so it is not known of the best man wins. What if in the far-off past he did hurt the van ity of some political leader, or “wiggled” some financial affairs to the detriment of others. Who can say what is his moral code when he lives honestly and within the law. Some political leaders are in clined to allow unjustifiable methods or unacrupukouslness to influence elections if it seems to lead to their advantage—they know mass voters are inclined to to scratch for fleas. We are glad, though, that public elections are a part of our free institutions, but regret that in late years too many public services offices have be come appointive ones or elective only by small governing groups an councils. After a few years such appointees ofter become imbued with the idea they are indispensable, and become less courteous and less cooperative with their public. life-time jobs of this kind are not good, phy- chologically. Many such ap pointees should be dismissed from their jobs before they are bitten by their own stupidity. The people should be able to speak under all circumstances. The National Foundation through its local chapter is is suing a series of six simple health rules that should be ob served during the summer to help combat the disease. Scientific studies, financed by March of Dimes funds, indicate that the hands may be a means of spreading the virus infection through contamination of food, drinks or objects carried to the mouth.
