Historic Bethlehem Methodist
church in lower Chester county
has served its community for
over half a century and never
was more beautiful than when
on Tuesday evening, June 10 at
8 o’clock in a beautiful candle
light ceremony in the presence
of a large assemblage of rela
tives and friends, Miss Ada
Marie Beam pledged her troth
to James Bennie Folk of New
berry. The Rev. H. S. Sinclair
of Chester, performed the cere
mony using the impressive
double ring ceremony.
Bamboo, Southern Pine, Ivy,
Huckleberry, and White Abelia
interspersed with tall baskets
and bowls filled with white
gladioli, Queen Anne’s Lace,
Feverfew, Admiral Byrd Daisies
and Gardenias, and numerous
candelabra holding white lighted
catherdal candles, formed a
beautiful setting for the wedding
party. The family pews were
artistically designated by sprays
of greenery tied with white bows
and extending from each bow
was a white horseshoe.
Miss Doris Hare of Chester,
pianist, and Miss Julianne Sin
clair of Chester, vocalist, furn
ished the wedding music. Before
the ceremony, Miss Sinclair
sang “Because” (D’ Hardelot),
“Bridal Chorus” from “Lohen
grin” (Wagner) was used for
the processional and “Wedding
March” from “M idsummer
Nights Dream” (Mendelssohn)
for the recessional. During the
ceremony soft music was rend
ered. At the close of the cere
mony Miss Sinclair sang “The
Lord's Prayer” (Malotte).
Usher-groomsmen were John
nie Roberts, cousin of the bride,
and Johnnie McKeown, nephew
of the bride, both of Chester.
Winifred Kunkle of Newberry,
brother-in-law of the bride
groom, was best man.
Miss Esther Wagers, cousin of
the bride, and Mrs. C. H. Pac-
quin (Dot Allen) both of Chester,
were bridesmaids. They wore
identical gowns of yellow taffe
ta faille featuring sweetheart
neckline, fitted bodice, short
puffed sleeves and full skirts.
They also wore elbow length
white gloves and single strands
of pearls and carried nosegays
of mixed flowers tied with blue
satin ribbon.
Miss Emmie McKeown of
Chester, niece of the bride, was
maid of honor. She wore a blue
taffeta faille dress featuring a
fitted bodice, off-the-shoulder
draped neckline and a full skift.
She also wore elbow length
white gloves and a single strand
of pearls and carried a nosegay
of mixed flowers tied with yel
low satin ribbon.
The petite brunette bride was
radiantly beautiful as she ad
vanced to the altar on the arm
of her father, Jesse Franklin
Beam, by whom she was given
in marriage. Her dress of white
silk crepe featured a sweetheart
neckline, fitted bodice, long fitt
ed sleeves ending in calla lily
points over her wrists and a
a very full skirt. Her shoulder
leigth veil of bridal illusion fell
from a coronet of starched crepe.
She carried a white Bible topped
with a purple throated orchid
and showered with satin stream
ers. Her only ornaments were
a double strand of pearls, gift of
the bridegroom and an heirloom
gold bracelet, gift of her mater
nal grandfather to her mother.
Mrs. Nettie Vamadore of
Chester, aunt of the bride, wore
a grey crepe dress and a cor
sage of orchids.
Mrs. L. H. Folk of Newberry,
mother of the bridegroom, wore
a dress of navy blue sheer crepe

Miss Lucy Virginia Senn of
Newberry and Columbia became
the bride of Dr. James Woodrow
Hassell, Jr., of Blacksburg, Vir
ginia and Columbia, Saturday
evening, May 31 at 8:30 o’clock
in Aveleigh Presbyterian church
of Newberry with the Rev. Jas.
Woodrow Hassell, father of the
bridegroom, performing the
double ring ceremony in the
presence of a large assemblage
of relatives and friends.
Daisies, feverfew, with green
ery were used in decorating the
altar together with • tall baskets
of mammoth daisies and white
gladioli against a background of
palms and ferns. Seven branch
ed candelabra holding cathedral
tapers were used with the flor
al decorations. Groups of three
candles with white flowers and
greenery were used in the
church windows.
A program of wedding music
was played by Robert Van Dor-
en, organist of Trinity Episcopal
Church of Columbia.
The bride’s matron-of-honor
was her sister, Mrs. William M.
Corbett, Jr., of Columbia. Miss
Ben Stuckey of Bishopville and
Columbia, was maid-of-honor
and the brides maids were Miss
Eelanor McMaster of Kingstree
and Columbia, and Miss Frances
Hinnant of Ridgeway and Co
lumbia. They wore dresses of
pale blue faille made with fitted
bodice and full skirts with
small bustle.
The matron of honor carried a
bouquet of red roses tied with
matching ribbons; the maid of
and a corsage of orchids.
Mrs. Folk is the only daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Frank
lin Beam of Chester. She is a
graduate of Blackstock high and
for the past several years has
been connected with the Servivc
Office of Chester county. By her
pleasing personality and charm
ing ways, she has endeared her
self to a host of friends who -e-
gret that her marriage will take
her from their midst.
Mr. Folk is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. L. H. Folk of Newberry.
He is a graduate of Newberry
high school. He served in the
U. S. Army and saw 32 months
of active service in the E. T. O.
At present the bridegroom is
connected with a Texaco service
station in Newberry.
Immediately following the
ceremony the bride and groom
left for a short wedding trip to
the mountains of North Carolina.
For traveling the bride was be
comingly attired in a rose gabar
dine suit modeled on the new
long lines, three-quarter lengfn
sleeves, white hat, brown and
white shoes. Her corsage was
the orchid lifted from her Bible.
Upon their return they will
reside for the present with the
bridegroom’s parents in Newber
ry.
It is an interesting fact to
note that this beautiful little
country church which has been
the scene of many interesting
events, has in its long history
lent its sacred beauty to only
three marriages; the above be
ing the first to carry out all the
details of a traditional wedding.

while the brides maids’ flowers
were pink carnations.
Andre Hassell of Oak Ridge,
Term, brother of the bride
groom was best man. Dr. Wil
liam M. Corbett, Jr., of Colum
bia, brother-in-law of the bride,
Dr. Joe Williams of Staunton,
Va., and Charles Cuthbert of
Petersburg, Va., brother-in-law
of the bridegroom, were grooms
men. Dr. Ben N. Miller of Co
lumbia and Dr. Red Davis of
Charlotte, N. C., brother-in-law
of the bridegroom were ushers.
The bride, given in marriage
by her father, Dr. Hugh B. Senn,
was lovely in her bridal dress
of white satin featured with fitt
ed bodice, sweetheart neckline
embroidered in seed pearls and
a long train. Her full length
veil was held with a cornet of
pearls. Her only ornament was
a pearl cross, worn by the
bridegroom’s grandmother on
her wedding day. Her bridal
boquet of white gladioli was
centered with an orchid.
Mrs. Senn, mother of the bride
wore an oyster white dress with
an orchid corsage and Mrs.
Hassell, mother of the bride
groom, wore a black gown with
silver embroidiery and a red
rosebud corsage.
Immediately after the cere
mony the bride’s parents enter
tained with a reception at their
home on Harper street.
The reception room was dec
orated with pink roses, carna
tions and greenery. A bridal
scheme of green and white was
used in the dining room. The
dining table was covered with a
hand made lace cover and held
the three-tiered wedding cake on
a silver tray. Triple branched
silver candelabra holding white
candles and a lovely arrange
ment of tide and white flowers
were used about the table.
Refreshments of block cream,
cake and punch were served
from prettily appointed tables
on the lawn.
Assisting during the reception
were Dr. and Mrs. R. E. Living
ston, who greeted the guest at
the front door; Dr. and Mrs. A.
T. Neely and Mrs. W. M. Corbett
in the living room; Mrs. Ben
Miller and Mrs. R. E. Hana in
vited the guest into the dining
room; Mrs. W. S. Schenck pre
sided in the dining room; Mrs.
A. G. Agnew had charge of the
bride’s register; Mr. and Mrs.
James Smith, Sr., entertained
on the porch; Dr. and Mrs. John
Lide, Mr. and Mrs. Metts Fant,
and Miss Mary Wheeler, on the
lawn; Mrs. G. C. Agnew and
Mrs. Thorn well Senn had charge
of the punch bowl.

Dr. Hassell is the son of Rev.
and Mrs. James Monroe Hassell
of Goldsboro, N C., Presbyterian
missionaries and was born in
Japan. His mother was Archi
bald Friend of Petersburg, Va.,
before marriage. He is a grad
uate of Davidson College, David
son, N. C., and received his
Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from
the University of North Caro-
lina* Chapel Hill. During the
recent war he served in the
United States Navy as a lieuten
