Durrett M. Lipscomb
Dies In Columbia
Durrett Moore Lipscomb, 67,
1914 Senate street, Columbia,
died at Providence Hospital in
that city Saturday afternoon at
1 o’clock, after an illness of a
few days.
He was born in Ninety Six.
the son of Edwin M. and Mary
Moore Lipscomb. He lived in
Newberry several years and
moved to Columbia from here
and lived there for the past 18
years. At the time of his
death he was secretary and
treasurer of the South Carolina
Cotton Seed Crushers Associa
tion, a Mason and a Shriner.
Mr. Lipscomb is survived by
his widow, Mrs. Nelle Moseley
Lipscomb; five daughters, Mrs.
John F. Busch of Marietta, Ga„
Mrs. Walter A. Schoefield of
Youngstown, Ohio; Mrs. J. Leo
Zwahlen of Denver, Colo., Mrs.
Durrett Williams and Mrs. A. E.
Moorehead, Jr., both of Colum
bia; three sons, Edwin M. Lip
scomb, James L. Lipscomb, and
Lewis M. Lipscomb, all of New
berry. Twelve grandchildren
and two sisters, Mrs. W. O.
Self and Miss Mary Lipscomb,
both of Ninety Six.
Funeral services were held at
4 o’clock Tuesday afternoon
from Dunbar Funeral home,
conducted by the Rev. R. L.
Holroyd, pastor of Washington
Street Methodist church. Inter
ment followed in Rosemont
cemetery at Newberry.
Active pallbearers were R. M.
Hughes, H. L. McPherson, R. E.
Evans, E. H. Lawton, E. H. Sit-
ton and C. Fitzsimmons.

the Newberry hospital on Satur
day, May 17 Mrs. Mims and
daughter are doing nicely.

Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur E. Long,
Jr., are receiving congratulations
from their friends upon the ar
rival of a son, Clyde Eugene
Long, born at the Newberry
hospital, Monday, May 19.
Mrs. Long, the former Miss
Mary Louise Pearson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Pearson
of Spartanburg, and son are do
ing nicely.
COUNTY NEGRO TAKEN
IN PHILADELPHIA, PA.
Sheriff Ben F. Dawkins was
notified Monday by officers in
Philadelphia, Pa., of the arrest
of Willie Wallace, Newberry
county negro man charged with
murder of his wife at their
home in Chappells on March 22.
This was the first the officers
had heard of Wallace since he
left the county after committing
the murder.
The Sheriffs force is continu
ing the search for Lee Gary,
who attacked and robbed Mrs.
Ammons in her store on Mc-
Swain street Friday night, May

Mrs. Nancy' Cora Purdue
Hamm, 60, died last Thursday
afternoon at the home of her
son on Caldwell street. She had
been in declining health for the
past two years but had been
confined to her bed for only a
few weeks.
She was a daughter of the
late J. R. and Catherine Lake
Purdue and was a former resi
dent of the St. Lukes section of
the county, she was a member
of St. Lukes Lutheran church.
Funeral services were held
Friday at five p. m. at St. Lukes
Lutheran church with Rev. C. E.
Seastrunk and Rev. J. B. Har
man conducting. Interment was
in the church cemetery.
Surviving are two sons Max-
cy Epting Hamm, and James Ira
Hamm, Newberry; one brother,
W. M. Purdue, Clinton; one sis
ter, Miss Rebecca Purdue, New
berry and three grandchildren.
