Bride Honored
At Luncheon
One of the lovely pre-nuptial
affairs honoring Miss Mary
Alice Mitchell, bride-elect was,
the luncheon given by Mrs. Wil
ton Todd of Pelzer and Mrs. M.
W. Todd, Jr., at the Wiseman
Hotel Thursday preceding her
wedding in the evening to Hart
Jordan of Edgefield.
The arrangement of the table
was very striking, being center
ed with a reflector and large
crystal bowl containing white
snapdragons, carnations, and
fern, and flanked with crystal
candle holders showered with
lily of the valley. A color
scheme of green and white was
used throughout the dining
room.
A delicious luncheon was serv
ed, the honoree’s place being
marked with a corsage of white
roses. Each guest was presented
a miniature corsage. The hon-
oree was also presented a lovely
gift.

A meeting of the citizens of
the Town of .Newberry, S. C.,
is called and will be held on
Friday, May 16th, 1947, at 8
o’clock, P. M., in the Recorder’s
Court Room.
The purpose of the meeting is
to elect officers and an execu
tive committee of the Demo
cratic Club of the Town, and to
make necessary arrangements to
hold a primary to nominate can
didates for municipal offices.

BURTON LEWIS WINS
4-H FORESTRY CONTEST
Burton Lewis, son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. W. Lewis and member
of the Prosperity 4-H club was
declared county winner in the
one-acre 4-H forestry thinning
contest. John Scurry, son of
Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Scurry, and
member of the Chappells 4-H
club, placed second. And, Hor
ace Bowles, Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Horace Bowles, Sr., and
member of the Silverstreet 4-H
club placed third.
Placing by individual clubs
were: Prosperity club, Burton
Lewis, first; Monroe Wert,s sec
ond; Bill Scurry, third.
Silverstr eet club; Horace
Bowles, Jr., first.
Pomaria club. Harvey Oxner,
first; James Wicker, second;
Hayne Stuck, third.
These plots were judged by
John Billingsley, U. S. Forest
Ranger, Mr. John Clark, District
Forester and W. J. Barker, ex
tension forester. The boys
worked under the supervision of
W. A. Ridgeway, assistant coun
ty agent, assisted by S. A. Mar-
but, assistant extension forester.
Plots that were thinned under
this program two years ago are
showing the benefits of this
practice and it is hoped that
this program will be continued.

attended the Cason-Hanna wed
ding which was held in Green
ville Thursday evening in the
First Presbyterian church. They
plan to attend the Miller-Young
wedding in Whitmire, Saturday
evening, which will take place
in the First Presbyterian church
there. Mr. Hanna and Mrs.
Young are nephews of Mr. Han
na.
Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Hanna, Jr.
of New York City will arrive
Wednesday to spend a week
here in the home of Mr. Han
na’s parents, Mr. an (}Mrs. R.

TRIED IN FEDERAL COURT
Sseriff Ben F. Dawkins re
ported this morning that the
following men were tried this
week in fedreal court held in
Greenwood. All cases were
made by officers of Newberry-
county:
Rayford Evans, Willie Ellison,
Loyd Duncan, Conner Rollen,
Marion Tinksesley, Joe Graham,
John Hardy (colored), Horace
(Tip) Cromer (colored).
Four of these men were found
guilty by jury and four plead
guilty.
