Sanders, who underwent a major operation in the Columbia hospital the first of last week returned to her home on Boundary street over the weekend. She is reported to be recuperating satisfactorily, her many friends will be glad to learn. Long Director Crop Improvement Group County Agent P. B. Ezell, H. O. Long, H. M. Epting and H. H. Ruff of Newberry county at tended the meeting of the new ly organized South Carolina Crop Improvement association in Columbia last Thursday, at which time W. Hugh McGee of Starr was elected president, and organized for work under state and federal seed laws. Other officers elected were O. H. Weinges of St. Matthews, vice president; Robert H. Gar rison of Clemson College, sec retary-treasurer; and nine board of directors members, one of whom was Mr. Long from New berry county. The group prepared to work with Clemson College to set up a seed certification program with inspectors working during crop season, to improve quality of seed in South Carolina. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Caldwell of Pomaria, are the proud par ents of a son, born at Newberry County hospital, Sunday, May fourth. TOM CROMER SOLOS AT AIRPORT HERE Among those who have re cently soloed at the Newberry Airport is Tom Cromer. Mr. Cromer became interested in flying when his son, Eddie Cromer was taking flight instruc tion at the airport last year. Since that time, he has been up on numerous occasions with his son. Mr. Cromer was so fas cinated that he took up flying himself, and Tuesday afternoon he made his first solo flight. Others recently going up for the first time alone are Louis Ringer and Thad McCrackin, Jr. LANDS IN NEW ORLEANS Lieut, and Mrs. Charles Rag land and small son, Charles Jr., landed in New Orleans, La., last week from Jamacia where lieu tenant Ragland had been on duty for the past 18 months. Mrs. Ragland and Charles join ed him in Jamiaca about ten months ago. They are expected to arrive in Newberry this weekend for a visit in the home of Mrs. Rag land’s parents Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Nabors of Kinards, Newberry county announces the engagement of her daughter, Miss Josie Nabors, and Jacob Ernest Locklair, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Locklair of Summerville. The wedding will take place on June 11. Miss Nabors, a graduate of Bush River high school, receiv ed her A. B. degree from Win- throp college and is now a mem ber of the faculty of Jenkins- ville school. Mr. Locklair, after serving in the United States Army Air forces during the war, is now in business with his father at Summerville. He plans to en ter the University of South Carolina this fall to earn his degree. ROY DOGGETT WHITAKER Mr. and Mrs. Roy Whitaker of Columbia announce the birth of a son, Roy Doggert, bom at the Baptist hospital in Columbia on Monday, May fifth. Corwall to Sing Over Local Station Arthur Cornwall, radio tenor and teacher, will present a spe cial tribute to “Mothers” on WKDK Sunday, May 11, from 6 to 6:15 p. m. The program, which was written by him, will feature two of his poems, “Mother of Mine” and “Starlight”. He will sing three songs, “Little Mother of Mine”, “My Mother’s Bible”, and “Angel Mother”, which he arranged. Miss Mary Burton has been invited to be a guest in the studio. She was a classmate of Mr. Cornwall’s late mother (Miss Margaret Colvin) at Greenville Female College, now part of Furman University.
