THE NEWBERRY SUN
Bv TeJ Kesting
You’ve heard about a worm.
He goes down in the ground,
burrows along for a while, then
turns and comes back up again.
Sometimes, though, he goes
down, burrows along, then turns
down again. Dan Holland, noted
outdoorsman, has observed many
hunters operate the same way.
They go in from the road, hunt
awhile, then turn and come back
out to the road. What they dread
most is that they will make that
last turn in the wrong direction.
These fellows don’t have much
fun or get much game.
Admittedly, most men lack
even a worm’s instict to turn
in the right direction at the
right time, but a man does have
certain advantages not afforded a
worm—if he would only make
use of them. He has probably
heard of maps and compasses,
but figures they are a nuisance,
or that they are difficult to use.
He is wrong, of course. It
takes little more intelligence to
read a topographic map that to
read a road map, and if it will
put the hunter at ease and allow
him to hunt without the buga
boo of getting lost acting as a
constant mental hazard, then it
is certajnly worth the bother.
Although important, • the use
of a map as a safeguard against
getting lost is ope of its least
valuable assets to the outdoors-
man. A man who knows how to
use a topographic map can al
most read “Trout,” “Deer,” or
“Grouse” on it as easily as the
motorist can read “Route 67.”
These maps give a complete
and accurate picture of the
earth’s surface. Every trickle of
water, every pond or lake, every
marsh, every contour of the
ground, every lane and trail are
shown in detail. The survey of
the whole nation is not com
plete, but most of the areas
of interest to sportsmen are
covered.
Maps are made and issued by
the United States Geological
Survey, Washington, D. C. Their
survey, which will eventually
cover the entire United States
and possessions, was started in
1882 and is still in progress.
About half the country nas been
completed to date, but as men
tioned earlier, much of the coun
try of interest to sportsmen has
already been surveyed.
Excelent maps of Canada may
b e procured from Canadian Geo
logical Survey, Ottawa, Ontario,
Canada.

Commander Land Cruiser
- Now On Display -
This is a view of the new Land Cruiser which has just been added to Studebaker’s line of postwar

more richly appointed than any previously announced by Studebaker. Harmonious interior color com
binations, deep cushioning and high quality fabrics are among features which promise to make the car a
standout in the luxury automobile field. The Land Cruiser will be available only as a four-doo, •ednn.

white gladioli against a back
ground of bamboo and cathedral
tapers burning in branched can-
elabra. White satin bows mark
ed the family pews.
Mrs. James L. Taylor, pianist,

nade” (Schubert), “All For You”
(Brown), and “Poeme” (Fibich).
Miss Harvey sang “O Promise
Me” (De Koven) and “I Love
Thee” (Grieg). “Bridal Chorus”
(Lohengrin) (Wagner) was used
for the processional and “Wed

Holy Spirit”, as a benediction.
Serving as ushers and lighting
the candles were Edward Bouk-

Miss Frances Wood, sister of
th e bride, was maid-of-honor
and only attendant. She wore a
lavendatr tailored suit with
black accessories and carried an
old-fashioned bouquet of mixed
spring flowers tied with yellow
satin ribbon.
The bride entered the church
with her brother, J. W. Wood,
who gave her in marriage. She
was lovely in a grey gabardine
suit with black accessories. She
carried a white prayer book
topped with a pink-throated or
