L _ THE NEWBERRY SUN FRIDAY, NOVEMBER I. 1946 Society WEDDINGS ENGAGEMENTS PERSONALS Mrs. Miller Entertains At Delightful Parties Two of the most delightful bridge parties of the season were given Friday morning and afternoon by Mrs. W. O. Miller at her home, 1505 Johnstone street. Bowls of roses and dahlias were used in the living and dining rooms to form a comple mentary color scheme where tables were arranged for the 40 players. When scores were added in the morning, Mrs. Don Rook was found to hold high and Mrs. Dave Hayes, second high, with bingo falling to Mrs. Hunter Brown. In the afternoon when scores were added, Mrs. McHardy Mower was awarded high and Mrs. Hope B. W lson second high, and Mrs. Joe Feagle drew bingo. At the end of each party deli cious chicken salad with soft drinks was served by the hostess. Mrs, Clyde McCarley of Whit mire was a weekend guest in the home of Mrs. W. O. Miller on John stone street. Mrs. A. H. Skardon and two children, Hooper, Jr., and Norton, of Spa» '.nburg, and Mrs. White Bulloch of Clinton, were weekend visitors in the home of their mother, Mrs. S. O. Nesley on Boundary street. Mrs. H. B. Senn and Mrs. A. T. Neely attended the Presbyterian Synodical which was held in Green wood at the first Presbyterian church Wednesday and Thursday. Mrs. O. F. Hendrix returned to her home in Lexington Wednesday after spending several days here with her son, C. E. Hendrix and family on Hunt street. Mrs. Gene Heirs and daughter Rebecca, of Charlotte, N. C., spent several days this week with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Armfield at Gil- dercrest. Weekend guests of Mrs. Annie B. Sligh were Miss Mary Burdette of Washington, D. C., and Ernest Sech- rest of Greenville. Mrs. O. B. Cannon left Thursday morning for Fredericksburg, Va., to spend about a month with her sis ter, Mrs. Cecil Reid and Mr. Reid. Jack W. Taylor, a student at N. C. State College in Raleigh, N. C., spent the weekend here jn the home of his aunt, Mrs. H. H. Abrams on Calhoun street. He also attended the Abrams-Martin wedding Sun day morning. Mrs. T. E. Davis and daughter, Miss Mary Ann Davis, spent Sun day in Elkin, N. C., with Mrs. Davis’ sister, Mrs. T. F. Cooley and family. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Armfield spent the weekend in Statesville, N. C., in the home of Mr. Armfield’s sister, Mrs. D. H. McHargue and Mr. McHargue. Mrs. Kate F. Leavell is spending this week in Atlanta, Ga., in the home of her son and daughter-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. J. I. Leavell. Mr. and Mrs. David Williams and two children, Jimmy and Paul of Florence spent from Wednesday un til Sunday of last week in the home of Mr. Williams’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Williams on Mayer ave nue. Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Senn and son, Dickie of Clemson, were weekend visitors in the home of Mr. Senn’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Senn on College street. Joe M. Roberts, who will be man ager of the Newberry County Bank, with his wife and two children, Joe and June, moved to Newberry Mon day, from Columbia, and are mak ing their home with Miss Sadie Bowers on McCaughrin avenue for the present. Joe, who is 12 years of age is a member of the seventh grade at junior high school and June, age eight, is a member of the third grade at Boundary street. Mr. and Mrs. W. Boyd Campbell and son, Billy, of Florence are spending a couple of weeks here in the home of Mr. Campbell’s par ents. Mr. and Mrs. S. C. Campbell on Harrington street, and with Mrs. Campbell’s sister, Mrs. Blair Ran kin in Whitmire. Mrs. Ruth Longshore attended the district meeting of School Lunch Supervisors, which was held in Greenwood Tuesday. Mrs. Lola Nesley Bradley and brother, George Mosely of Ohio, spent a few days last week in the home of Mrs. Victoria Bradley. NEAL WORKMAN DICKERT CHRISTENED LAST SUNDAY Master Neal Workman Dickert, nfant son of Dr. and Mrs. Elbert* J. Dickert of Columbia, was Christ ened on Sunday, October 27 at high noon before the altar of O’Neal Street Methodist church. Rev. C. Frank DuBose officated at this impressive service in the pres ence of the congregation and a num ber of friends and relatives. Large baskets of giant white chrysanthemums and ferns were ar ranged in the chancel and on the altar. Miss Martha Thornton cf Green ville, cousin of Dr. Dickert and or ganist, played ‘Mighty Like A Rose” during the servee. Neal wore his father’s long white batiste baby dress and a ring given him my his godmother, Miss Lillie Mae Workman. Misses Annie Winstead of New Orleans, La., and Lillie Mae Work man of Chappells, were named god mothers at the christening, and Mr. Harold Layton, godfather. Mrs. Allen Buddin stood as proxy for Miss Winstead who was unable to attend. Joining the group at the altar were Mrs. C. F. Layton, maternal grandmother* and Mrs. Neal W. Workman, paternal grandmother. Pomaria School News The many friends of Mrs. Stevie Wright wll be sorry to learn that she is a patient in the Newberry Hospital suffering with virous pneumonia. Mrs. W. E. Baker and mother, Mrs. Reed of Whitmire, spent Friday in Newberry on business. PVT. WILLIE ROBERT GIL LIAM, stationed at Camp Lee, Va., spent the weekend here in the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lon nie Gilliam on Cornelia street. Miss Gilda Rones of Whitmire, has enrolled as a student at Greens boro College in Greensboro, N. C., acccrding to an announcement by President I uther L. Gobbel. Mrs. J. Y. McFall and daughter, Mrs. E. S. Toohey and small son, Dickie, of Greenville, spent Tuesday in the home of Mrs. John M. Ki- nard on Calhoun street. Mr. and Mrs. Frank DeVore of Jacksonville, Fla., arrived in New berry Tuesday to visit Mr. DeVore’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank P. Qe Vore at the Wiseman hotel. She has prepared and served approximately 2000 meals in the past year, stressing a balanced diet As a reward for her work she will leave December first for a trip to Chicago with all expenses paid by Servel, Inc. We are also very proud of Stock- man Richardson who won two blue ribbons on his calf at the Newberry County Fair this week. This calf was given to Stockman in his F. F. A. club work and he is making quite a record with it. The Community Fair at the Po maria High school Friday, October 18 was quite a success. The audi torium and gymnasum made a very pleasing picture with the brightly decolrated booths, attractive dis plays, beautiful flowers and carni val. , The home demonstration club wo n first prize on their booth with the 4-H club winning second. In the flower shew, Mrs. Y. Von A. Riser won first prize and honor able mention on dahlias. Mrs. C. S. Glymph won first prize and Mrs. H. W. Lominick, honorable mention on native plants; Mrs. J. E. Koon, first prize and honorable mention on rosebuds; Mrs. R. H. Setzler, 1st prize, and Mrs. Addie Bedenbaugh, honorable mention on arrangement of cut flowers. The attendance was very good, both afternoon and night. The pet parade was the main attraction for the afternoon. There were seven teen pets in the parade. David Lominick won 1st prize with his dog; Richard Ringer, 2nd with his ducks; and Faye Wilson, 3rd, with her cat. Side shows, fish pond, bazaar, games, auction sale, dipping for lucky blocks, picture show, ring toss, and all kinds of ‘eats’ kept everyone busy and happy. COUNTY FOUR-H POULTRY EXHIBIT A special 4-H poultry exhibit is entered in the Newberry County Fair by the five 4-IJ girls and five 4-H boys who raised 100 chicks each in the contest sponsored by Sears, Roebuck and company. Each boy and girl will enter 10 of their choice pullets. Prizes amounting to over $100 will be awarded for development of the pullets and the record kept by the 4-H member. Carpen ter of Oakland mill were pleasantly surprised to get a telephone caU from their son. Lieutenant D. O. Carpenter, Jr., who is stationed in Japan. They report that the line was flear and the conversation carried on just the same as if he were in the states. Lieut. Carpenter has been in the 11th Airborne Division as a Para trooper since four months before hostilities ceased with Japan, and has signed up to stay over there until the first of the year.
