The
Veteran’s Corner
National Service Life Insurance,
as originally authorized by Con
gress, was primarily intended as a
temporary means of protection for
those soon to go to the world’s
battlefronts.
The original form of insurance,
the type that virtually all service
men carried while in uniform, was
known as term insurance. That is
the type thet many still have to
day, not knowing that term insur
ance can now be converted to
other and more desirable policies.
Q. Just what is term insurance?
A. Term insurance offers pro
tection against death but provides
for no savings program. It has
the advantage of enabling those in
the low income brackets to main
tain the highest possible protection
at the lowest possible cost. Its dis
advantages are that a term policy
has no cash value and rates for
term policies pyramid with advanc
ing age.
Q. If term insurance isn’t a good
policy, why does the Veterans Ad
ministration continue to urge vet
erans to reinstate term policies?
A. Most veterans are still young.
Term insurance is good insurance
now. But all veterans should give
serious consideration in the near
future to converting to a permanent
type policy.
Under no conditions, however,
should a veteran jump hastily into
a conversion. Permanent type
policies are more expensive than
term insurance and a veteran should
be fairly certain of his future eco
nomic status before he commits
himself to the large payments in
volved for a converted policy.
Q. Isn’t it true that when you
convert an NSLI policy, it is turn
ed over to a private commercial in
surance firm?
A. This is absolutely untrue.
The Insurance Service of the Vet
erans Administration has available
many types of policies to meet the
needs of any eligible veteran.
Q. What permanent NSLI poli
cies are available?
A. The following permanent
National Service Life Insurance
policies are available: ordinary
life, 30-year life, 20-year life, en
dowment at age 65; endowment at
age 60; and 20-year endowment.
The rates on all of them are far
lower than for any comparable com
mercial policy.
TIPS FOR HOME NURSES
Red Cross home nursing instruc
tors, along with the rudimentary
skills of nursing, teach the ten com
mandments of home care of the
sick which can be folowed with
benefits by every home maker:
1. Put the patient to bed.
2. Keep other members of the
family away from him.
3. Keep him quiet.
4. Take his temperature.
5. Ascertain location of pain.
. 6. Call doctor and report tem
perature and symptoms.
7. Give no cathartics or other
drugs until instructed by doctor.
8. Wash the hands after minis
tering to patient.
9. Follow the doctor’s orders.
10. Report progress to doctor at
intervals.
