Commerce Notes

I received this past week a notice
from the representative of the hard
wood veneer company that is con
sidering Newberry as a location to
establish a plant, stating that he
would -ie in Newberry the second
week in September. We have
sent out a number of questionaires
concerning available hardwood i n
and around Newberry county. Quite
a few of these have not been re
turned. If you are one of those
who have received a questionaire
and have not retrned it, please
send it in at once, whether you
have or do not have hardwood.
Yu will save us considerable time
in trying to locate available supply
of hardwood in the near future. On
the other hand, if you do not have
a questionaire and have some
hardwood, such as poplar, gum,
maple, cottonwood, etc., please con
tact me at the Chamber of Com
merce at your earliest convenience.

CLASSES
Board of Control Retracts Per
mission Granted for Use of Pool.
The sixty-five young Newberrians
who had expected to receive in
struction next week will just have
to be disappointed. There were
classes planned for Intermediate
Boys, Junior Life Savers Begin
ning Swimmers, Non-Swimmers,
Pre-School Swimmers; not to men
tion an Instructors Course. These
plans were made upon the basis of
permission obtained from the
Board of Control weeks ago. It’s
members now state that they didn’t
fully understand the scope of the
permission they granted. The Board
of Control, however, allowed the
local Red Cross to proceed upon the
premise that the promise given
could be relied upon and the pool
would be available. They were
aware of the progress being made
and no dejnurrer was forth coming.
Publicity was written, permission
for an aquatic school obtained from
headquarters, life guards secured,
all necessary materials assembled,
and registration accepted. Two lo
cal instructors were sent to Brevard
for training jn order that they might
help with the school. Mr. Dem-
sey from National staff is already
in Newberry ready to conduct the
school.
Late yesterday (Wednesday) we
were informed that the pool could
not be used for such a program ex
cept during one hour of the after
noon. The Board of Control ex
pects the program to be carried out
during the morning (when children
are in school) or at night (when
its too cold) with one niggardly hour
in the afternoon granted. Such a
program as now planned cannot
possibly be carried out under such
limitations.
The Red Cross Water Safety
Chairman, Mrs. S. E. Denton has
seen all the many preparations
thrown away and she has resigned.
The Board of Control would have
been under no misapprehensions as
to the amount of time such a swim
ming program would require had
they granted the Water Safety
Chairman’s request that she be al
lowed to appear before them to ex
plain the program. This request
was rudely refused.
Rather than see the abandonment
of all plans, the former Water
Safety Chairman plead that the
children be allowed to pay the pool
fee but be allowed to continue with
the classes as planned ... or that
Red Cross pay what expenses the
pool’s operation would require.
These requests were also refused.
Hence the lovely Margaret Hunter
pool continues (as it has in the past)
closed to all progressive worthwhile
programs for its young. Since the
revenue seems of paramount inter
est to the Board of Control, it is
pointed out that a considerably in
creased number of real swimmers
(instead of so many “splashers”)
would have, in the long run, actu
ally increased their revenue.
The policy adhered to by the
Board appears to be a very short

So Children, Parents, swallow
your disappointment. Among others,
thirty-eight children who would
have learned to swim next week
won’t swim any time soon. And, so
long as a few people see fit to pre
vent the consummation of any plan
not first conceived by themselves,
that’s the status quo.
Hence anyone who undertakes to
work out a progressive plan and ex
pects straightforward dealing must
abandon such folly. After all, per
haps thats the state of affairs
Newberry prefers. If it is, they’ve
got it—and if they don’t, what’s the
town full of anyway? Mice—or
men?
