TO FORMER ARMY OCCUPATIONAL SPECIALISTS
Good jobs in non-commissioned grades are being
offered now by the Regular Army to qualified former servicemen!
Veterans discharged on or after May 12, 1945, who enlist
or reenlist for 3 years may be enlisted in the non-commissioned
grade for which qualified, provided this grade is not higher
than that held at time of discharge, and provided that at least 6
months of former service was in one of 400 designated military
occupational specialties in which enlistment is now desired.
Important, interesting jobs are open in hundreds of skills
and trades in the Army, with splendid training and educational
advantages! These are in addition to free food, housing, cloth
ing, medical and dental care, low-cost insurance.

Highlights of Regular Army Enlistments
1. Enlistments for l 1 /^, 2 or 3
years. ( 1-year enlistments permitted
for men now in the Army with 6 or
more months of service.)
2. Enlistment age from 18 to 34
years inclusive (17 with parents*
consent) except for men now in the
Army, who may reenlist at any age,
and former service men depending
on length of service.
3. A reenlistment bonus of $50
for each year of active service since
such bonus was last paid, or since
last entry into service, provided
reenlistment is within 3 months
after last honorable discharge.
4. A furlough for men who re
enlist within 20 days. Full details of
other furlough privileges can be ob
tained from Recruiting Officers.
5. Mustering-out pay ( based upon
length of service) to all men who
are discharged to reenlist.
6. Option to retire at half pay
for the rest of your life after 20
years’ service — increasing to three-
quarters pay after 30 years’service.
All previous active federal military
service counts toward retirement.
7. GI Bill of Rights benefits as
sured for men who enlist on or before
October 5, 1946.
8. Choice of branch of service
and overseas theater (of those still
open) on 3-year enlistments.
My Dear Friend:
It has never been my practice to
suggest to other people considera
tion of any candidate for political
office because I think this is a mat
ter that every citizen should decide
for himself.
However, so many friends who
had suggested that I enter the race
for Governor have asked me whom
I am supporting that I feel it is en
tirely proper to answer the ques
tion and give my reasons. I am
not sure whether you have asked
me this question or not. The pres
sure of time makes it impossible
for me to check my list, therefore,
I may be sending this letter to
some who are not interested in my
position. If you are one of them,
please disregard this letter.
In my public statement of April
23d, after discussing our problems
in the state and the kind of leader
ship we needed, I said: “I will
gladly join the host of private citi
zens of the state in supporting
such leadership.” In my letter of
May 8th annoucing that I would
not be a candidate, I said, “I am
assured that there will be available
to the voters of the state one or
more men who desire the office,
and who, if elected, I believe will
give sound constructive administra
tion.”
In my opinion, Dr. James Mc
Leod of Florence comes nearer
meeting the requirements for the
governorship of the state at this
time than any other candidate. 1
am supporting him wholeheartedly
and. enthusiastically.
I have known Dr. McLeod for
some twenty-five years. He has the
qualities of sound, progressive
leadership that are needed in the
state today. He is a man of moral
courage and intellectual integrity
and will fight for what he believes
to be the best interests of South
Carolina. He is tied to no politi
cal or other group through promises
made or contributions accepted
and believes that state government
should be administered in behalf
of all of the people of the state and
not in the interest of individuals or
groups. He is running for the of
fice out of a sincere desire to be of
service to the state.
His platform is sound, construc
tive and fearless. Although I do
not agree with every item in. his
platform (which is too nyich to
expect of any candidate), I am
convinced that what he stands for,
plus his ability to work with
people and to get action, plus his
courage, makes him the type of
man that South Carolina needs in
the Governor’s chair today.
I am not politically interested in
any individual. My only interest
is in the future of South Carolina,
its progress and the welfare of its
people. I believe that James Mc
Leod will provide the leadership on
which our state can go forward
politically, socially and economi-
mically.
If you support Dr. McLeod, I
hope you will do so actively and
agressively.
