Presently she opened the door
again and motioned to me to fol
low her. We climbed a pair of
steps, then turned left and climb
ed some more steps.
,A.s I followed the landlady I
thought of home, of the many
warnings against gettting mixed
up with “bad women’’. I was re
assured, however, to some extent
by the fact that she was old enough
to be my mother. On the second
Hjor she softly opened the door to
a room and nodded to me to enter.
After she had closed the door 1
heard her footseps going back
down the steps and I felt better.
By the time I had removed my
clothes my eyes had become ac-
customed to the dark I could make
out objects in the room. Along
side my own bed was another and
the lump in the middle of it told
me I was not alone. I quietly slip
ped into bed and was about to doze
off when a voice from the other bed
demanded: “Who are you?” I told
her in a very nervous voice who I
was. “Well, quit making so damn
much racket and go to sleep.” I
did.
I was much ashamed next morn
ing for sleeping in this house and
got up early and tried to slip out
unseen. The landlady was already
up, sweeping off the front porch.
“Where you going, son,” she ask
ed.
I told her I was going to try to
find some work-
“Where you gonna eat?”
At that I sat down on the steps
and said nothing. The landlady
continued to sweep. Finished she
knocked her broom out on the edge
of the porch, sat it in a comer and
told me to come on in the house.
I again followed her down the
hall, this time to a door opening
upon the kitchen. A negro woman
was preparing breakfast and the
aroma of good food almost caused
me to faint. I found my way to a
chair at a small table, however,
and the landlady took up a plate
and began to fill it at the stove.
As I began to eat the landlady be
gan to talk. She told me the com
plete story of her life. It has been
said that a woman never forgets
her sex; that she must always have
social communion with a male. I
suppose that is the reason she talk^
ed to me, runt of a male tho’ r
was.
She said that she was born at
Sampit, a whistle stop on the
Georgetown and Western railway,
oetween Lanes and Georgetown.
She had not been “betrayed” she
said, but entered a life of “sin”
openly and boldly because she
wanted things that her tenant-
farmer father couldn’t give her. She
had no regrets, tho’ she admitted
that advancing age was bringing a
loneliness that was disquieting.
I could not help but offer the
landlady my hand as I took leave of
her at the steps and into this hand
as I attempted to withdraw it she
pressed a dollar bill.
I guess this old girl has long ago
gone to hell, -for that is where
"sinful” women go, as I under
stand it from the preachers. But 1
hope not, and I get certain consola
tion that all may be well with her
from a little verse by the great
preacher, Martin Luther:
“Who does not love wine, women
and song,
Remains a fool his whole life
long.”
Yes, Martin said that, my Luth
eran friends to the contrary. And
he didn’t say woman—he said wo
men.
Mr. Mrs. LeRoy Anderson and
son, Eddie, have returned from a
week’s visit to- Mr. and Mrs. Mar
tin Gaudian in Washington, D. C.
They also spent several days in
New York City.
Mr. and Mrs. Mighton recently
moved from New York to Charles
ton, where Mr. Mighton is manager
of the Socony Vacum Oil Co.
