but the greatest of these is a weak
ness for religion. Also women are
ambitious, some of them powerfully
so. The woman who married the
black and aging pappy did not do
so because she loved him but be
cause she wanted to wear the heav
enly britches. Pappy will need all
his “divine” powers and the help
of the devil beside to be able to
even hold up his head in “heaven”
hereafter.
LAWYERS, singly 0 r in combi
nation, usually come out on top in
politics. It remained for young
Maxcy Stone to give them a good
trouncing in Tuesday’s primaiy.
Almost the entire Newberry bar,
with the exception of Blease and
Saint-Amand were said to be op
posed to Stone. The most active of
the active was lawyer William
Hunter. Mr. Hunter fought to
keep the list closed after the with
drawal of Mrs. Workman and
seemed to be spokesman for the
lawyers fighting Mr. Stone.
The trouble arose out of a
charge by the opposing group of
lawyers that Mrs. Workman was
ladling out all the I'-gal gravy in
the P. J office to Messrs Blease and
Saint-Amand.
If I were as mean as I should be
in this instance, I would give you
the names of lawyers who teamed
up with a lawyer who kept out of
the war via exemptions, in order to
defeat a boy who patriotically did
his duty.
One of these days when my liv
er gets to acting up I am likely to
do that very thing. Do you want
them?
I supported Maxcy Stone, not be
cause he was a particular friend,
but because of a resolution I made
during the war—a resolution which
I intend to keep. I declared then,
that, all things being equal, I would
back the boys who fought for me
in all their undertakings to re-es
tablish themselves in civilian life.
I voted for him and I induced
a lady friend of mine to vote for
him, and I have no apology to
make to anyone. There is still
vividly impressed upon my mind
the long, long months and years
these boys spent in the service for
little pay while the rest of us were
free to chase dollars and enjoy a
normal existence.
Maxcy Stone will make us a good
Probate Judge. How he divides
the boodle among the barristers is no
concern of mine. I don’t give a
damn.
The American Legion, like the
proverbial bride, will be left wait
ing at the church, unless it bestirs
itself politically in local politics.
Anyone with half an eye can see
the influence of the numerically in
ferior VFW in the Probate Judge’s
race. I do not have all the dope
at hand but I think it safe to say
that the 404 majority given Stone
at Whitmire, (which elected him)
was the work of this organization,
and the Newberry chapter put in
some telling blows.
The Legion may feel that it is
strong enough to ignore the VFW
but if VFW gets all the offices,
where will that leave the Legion
with it ever so many members? And
what effect on its prestige?
The VFW can now also lay some
claim to the favor of Congressman-
elect Dorn. It supported him al
most solidly.
As a long friend of the Legion I
want to warn you fellows now to
get “hep” to the new trend in poli
tics. The ex-GI’s are definitely po
litically minded and they are go
ing to affiliate with the organiza
tion which offers them most along
these lines.

MANY HAVE WONDERED about
the marriage of the pretty, rich
young white woman to the Negro
“God” Father Divine. Those who
have so wondered don’t know wo
men. I know women and I will give
you boys the low-down presently.
First, however, I want to say that
this is not the first mesalliance in
the annals of religion. Moses mar
ried a Negro gal and when he had
put her virtue on the second-hand
counter gave her the run-around
and hiked off down to Midian and
married himself a white gal. Maybe
I had better tell you the whole story.
Moses, fresh from refusing to have
anything to do with the beauteous
and sensous black-eyed daughter of
the king of Egypt (what a lie! what
a lie!) moved with his army against
the Ethiopians. Arrived at the
city walls he spied the Negro gal
at her window on top of the wall
and concluded a bargain with her.
He agreed to become her Mosiac
tootsy-wootsie if she, in return,
would toss him the key of the city.
Poor unsuspecting girl not know
ing the ways of white folks readily
forked it over. Captain Moses mov
ed his army in and snipped off a
few thousand black heads and
turned the government over to a
buck sergeant. History is silent on
Moses’ acts until next morning
when he skipped out but it is safe
to say that he wasn’t playing mum-
bley-pep. And now for the expla
nation.

NEWBERRY CITY SCHOOLS
Begin August 29, 1946
The session 1946-47 of the Newberry City Schools
will begin Thursday morning, August. 29, at nine o'clock,
at which time all new students and all conditioned students
Will report for registration and examination.
All students, both new and old, are asked to report
to their respective schools on Friday morning at nine
o’clock for lessor assignments, renting of textbooks, and
other necessary preliminary matters. It is very necessary
that every student be present on this day.
Regular classes will be held on Monday, September
2nd, and every student is urged to be present with well
prepared lessons.
