H. M. EPTING and his alfalfa demonstration that has produced an excellent quality of hay contin
uously for the past seven years. Mr. Epting has an additional plot of.youg alfalfa entered i n the New
berry county contest. This contest was planned by the Clemeon College 'Extension Service and is being
conducted to encourage larger yie'ds of alfalfa and to increase the total acreage of .this profitable crop
in the county. The Newberry Chamber of Commerce is offering $200.00 in prize money that will be
divided between the ten winners in this contest.
Mr. Epting has found that proper fertilization and the use of agricultural lime is the secret of ex
tending the life of alfalfa over a longer period of years than was thouught .possible in the past.
Graham-Lathrop
The wedding of Miss Lula Pauline
Graham and George Ray Lathrop
took place April 21 at 5 o’clock in
the Lutheran parsonage in Newber
ry with the Rev. C. J. Rice, pastor
of the bride performing the ring
ceremony.
The bride wore for her wedding
navy with black and white acces
sories and a corsage of pink carna
tions.
Cadet Grace Graham of Rock Hill,
sister of the bride, was maid of hon
or. She wore a two-piece white
sharkskin suit with red accessories
and her corsage was an orchid.
The bridegroom had for his best
man, his brother, Wodrow Lathrop
of Newberry.
Mrs. Lathrop is the oldest daugh
ter of Mrs. Catherine Graham of
Pomaria. She is a graduate of Mon-
ticello school and for the past five
years has been employed by the Ar-
agon-Baldwin mills of Whitmire.
Mr. Lathrop is the son of Mr. and

Mrs. W. P. Lathrop of Newberry.
He served with the Eighth Air Force
for five years, three of which was
spent overseas in the African and
European theater. He won the Dis
tinguished Unit badge, EAMET ser
vice medal, American Defense ser
vice medal, American Theater Ser
vice medal and the Bronze Star.
After a trip to Florida, they are
making their home in Newberry
where Mr. Lathrop is employed at
J. F. Hawkin’s dairy.
Keitt Purcell, a student at The
Citadel, Charleston and “Buzz” Pur
cell, student at Georgia Tech, At
lanta, Ga., spent the weekend with
their parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. B.
Purcell on Main street. They also
attended the May Day exercises
and dance at Winthrop college, Sat
urday as guests of Miss Mary Ann
Davis.

College street, was elected a member
of the County Medical Society at the
regular monthly meeting which was
held Friday night. He now has full
hospital privileges, and will special
ize in obstetrics, gynecology and
surgery.
