FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1946 THE NEWBERRY BOH PAGE FIVE HOME Demonstration By Ethel L. Counts The past week has been a ful! one, full of club activities. To begin with, the Vaughnville H. D. club women served sandwiches and drinks at the Workman Jersey sale. They not only realized a nice little sum but had a most enjoyable day. Silverstreet Home Demonstration club sponsored a Community Fair Thursday night, Nov. 1st which was one of the successes of the season. Only those present can begin to do it justice. Smyrna club held then annual Har vest Festival on Friday ni^ht. The! program began with a picnic supper and ended up with a picture show. Mr. T. W. Morgan, assistant director, gave a talk that will give food for thought for some time to come. St. Philips club served their annual chicken barbecue supper on Friday night. As usual, this was quite a success. Milk—Do you know that 1 quart of milk will furinsh the same amount of calcium (the teeth and bone and good rich red blood builder) that 28 oranges or 39 eggs or 27 pounds of potatoes or 6% pounds of cabbage or 7% pounds of carrots will. Raisins—Do you know that the golden raisins on the grocer’s shelves dried by artificial heat and then are treated with sulphur to give them to produce than their purple sisters that golden color? They cost more —are more perishable but are popu lar for fruit cakes and puddings. Raisins can help out with your short sugar ration because of their natural sweetness. Nuts—Do you know that you can can nuts? Just fill sterilized pint jars with nut mats—seal according to jar top used then lower jars in a two inch deep hot water bath and let them boil for about 30 minutes. Re move jars and complete the sealing. Cool them a nd store them in a dark cool place. MRS. G. D. WELLS Mrs. Gussie Dicker! Wells died at her home in Minneapolis, Minn., Wed nesday, Oct. 31. She was the wife of Dr. Amos Schumpert Wells of Min neapolis, both of whom were for merly of Newberry. Mrs. Wells has resided in Minne apolis for thirty years being active in civic work there. She was a mem ber of the D.A.R., the Woman’s Club of Minneapolis, and also a member of the Lutheran church. She wcs the daughter of the late Col. David Augustus Dickert and Kate Cromer Dickert of Newberry county. Funeral services were held Sun day afternoon at 3 o’clock at the home of her sister, Mrs. Claudia Suber, with Rev. R. A. Goodman conducting the services. Interment followed in Rosemont cemetery. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Wells, two sisters, Mrs. Claudia Coleman Suber and Mrs. Lucille D. -i.Jbley, and a number of neices and nephews. Loans!
