John Betchmann
John Emmet Betchman, 53, died
at the Columbia hospital late Tues
day night after an illness of several
weeks.
Mr. Betchman was a native of
Lexington county, but has made
his home in Newberry for more
than 35 years. He operated the
Betchman barber shop during his
stay in Newberry.
Funeral services were held this
(Thursday) morning from Epting
Memorial church with Rev. B. H.
Harvey in charge, assisted by Rev.
J. B. Harman, Rev. O. H. Matchett,
Rev. R. L. Powell and Rev. Marvin
Hembree. Interment followed in
Rosemont cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Merdy Richardson Betchman and
the following children: Miss Ethel
Betchman, Mrs. J. B. Harmon, Mrs.
Floy Frick and Joby Betchman. Also
his mother, Mrs. Wesley S. Jones
and two sisters, Mrs. Ora Bell Bur
nett, and Mrs. Virginia Smith, and
four grand-children survive.

Negroes Arrested
For Storing Liquor
Nellie Cooper and Mitchell Glenn,
negroes, were caught Sunday by the
city and county officers storing li
quor in their homes at Helena and
on the “Pike”, Newberry.
Both appeared before Magistrate
L. M. Graham Monday morning and
posted bond.

The infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Torence K. Shealy of Chapin,
passed away at the Newberry coun
ty hospital Tuesday afternoon.
Funeral services were held Wednes
day afternoon at 3 o’clock at the
graveside of Mt. Horeb Lutheran
church cemetery with Rev. Albert
Stimmerman conducting the services.

Mrs. W. R. Reid gave a lovely
party for Miss Wallace om Thurs
day afternoon when a group of her
friends played. The home was

terwards tempting refreshments
were served.
The hostes presented the honoree
with a lovely gift.
On Friday evening, Mrs. Wallace
the bride-elect’s mother, wjll enter
tain the bridal party and out-of-town
guests at a dinner after the re
hearsal.

Miller-Tyler
On April 26, Miss Annie Ruth
Miller and Mr. Robert L. Tyler
were married at the residence of the
officiating minister, the Rev. J. B.
Harman, 1004 Boundary street, New
berry, in the presence of a few
friends.
Mrs. Tyler is a daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. S. B. Miller of Newberry
and has been employed in the New
berry Cotton Mills.
Mr. Tyler is a son of Mr. and
Mrs. L. D. Tyler of Whitmire, and ia
employed in the Aragon-iBaldwin
Mills of Whitmire. They will have
their residence in Whitmire.
Killed At Chappells
On Motorcycle
Buck Marshall, negro from Ninety
Six was killed instantly Sunday when
the motorcycle which he was riding
ran off the pavement in front of S.
Basha’s home on highway No. 39
in Chappells.
