Whether or not the snakes were defended I was not told, but any way he handled them as though they were toys. An officer and an enlisted man took pictures of the native and cobra. From there we went to the “Burning Ghats” where corpses are burned and reduced to ashes and then thrown into the river a few feet away. There we saw some 8 or 10 corpses, old and young, and one old man was lying on the ground waiting to die. Logs are piled up, then the body is put on, and then more logs are put on cov ering the body. Then the pile of logs is set on fire producing a large blaze, not too large, and unbearable heat, After a while the logs and body are reduced to ashes. That was indeed a sight worth seeing. From there we visited the Mohammedan Temple where again we were required to re move our shoes. We were told that it is Calcutta’s tallest structure. At its top we were able to get a pano rama view of the entire city which covered an area of many miles square. It was there that our guide insisted that its population was 40 million people, however we knew better. From there we visited the famous “Black Foie of Calcutta where in 1756, I think, about 146 sol diers were imprisoned by the Indians and only a few came out alive It must have occurred during the time of the British conquest of India. The hole didn’t mean anything to me as its surface had been covered by concrete At a recent picture show there was some crack about the Black Hole of Calcutta. After about 2 1-2 hours of travel ling or sight-seeing the tour finally came to an end. It was indeed worth every penny that we spent. (One thing I forgot to mention at those different places we were called on to make small contributions which we were not aware of at the outset.) I was amazed to find Calcutta so modem in that practically all of In dia is so primitive. There they have modem up-to-date street cars or trams and many taxis in operation We had occasion to ride severl times in richshaw, which was quite a bit of fun. Those coolies or pushers can really trot along at a fair rate of speed pulling their little carts or bug gies on two wheels. We were lucky to run into an old friend of ours who put us up in camp (which is in the heart of the city) without any cost at all. There we enoyed eating some five or six good old army meals. We took our re maining meals at the Red Cross, which were not too expensive. Calcutta has a marvelous Red Cross building which accommodates approximately 350 soldiers with beds, together with baths, all kinds of rec reation—pool, ping pong, checkers reading, etc. It operates a splendid dining-room too. Again, we saw numbers of little naked children, cows on the streets along the main drag, the diseased and blind, and the so-called holy beg gars some of whom were asleep on the ground with the hot sun shining on them. Thus ends our visit to Calcutta.
