FENNELL’S
! HUNDREDS OF BRITONS SLAIN
BY 13 1-2 TON HUN ROCKETS
London, Mar. 16—Mammoth rock
ets—larger than the new RAF 11-
ton superbomb—have killed hundreds
ol' persons in recent attacks against
London and Southern England, it
may now be revealed.
The V-2 rocket, which descends
from a height of 70 miles traveling
faster than sound weighs approxi
mately 13 and one half tons. It is
46 feet long—nearly twice the length
o fthe RAF bomb. The rocket is five
1 and one half feet in diameter and
has a sharply pointed nose in which
one ton of explosive is carried alone.
After nearly five months of inter
mittent attack reviaed censorship
rules today permitted correspond
ents to specify that London was
the target of Hitler’s V-2 bomb.
Previously, the general term “sou
thern England” was required. They
have given London its third war
ordeal.
Its first bloodbath was the blitz
of 1940-41. Then came the flying
bomb offensive of last summer.
The number of rockets which
have fallen in the metropolitan area
and the specific places damaged or
destroyed remain a tight secret.
Flying bombs gave Britons a few
seconds’ warning in which to dive
for safety. The rockets give no
warning. Anyone standing within
the area of its explosive force is
struck down—never knowing what
hit him.
The first rockets to fall in the
city were called “flying gas men.”
Londoners were mystified by a
strange double explosions many be
lieving two rockets were falling
simultaneously. However, scientists
explained the phenomenon.
They said the first loud explosion
occurs when the stratospheric mis
sile hits the atmosphere and the
second when the rocket strikes the
earth. A rocket explosion can be
heard over almost the entire Lon
don area.
Some of the missies have left a
sickening mass of broken bodies,
smashed buildings and shattered
glass- „ .
But the full story of civilian
casualties cause by Hitler’s terror
weapon cannot be told now.

U. S. PEOPLE MUST TIGHTEN
BELTS—FDR
Washington, March 16—President
Roosevelt stepped into the inter
agency controversy over division of
dwindling food stocks today with the
assertion we will have to eat less to
help fee starving Europe.
The American people will have to
tighten their belts, he told a news
conference in outlining what he
termed administration policy on who
is to get what from domestic sup
plies.
The people in this country have
not suffered very greatly compared
with some others, he said, adding
t. iy are not going to suffer.
Asserting the war is not won yet,
the chief executive said he believed
the country will back up the idea
of keeping people ali ve abroad by
rationing existing food restrictions
at home and adding others.
Thus he apparently sided with
those in his aministration who
have opposed a War Food adminis
tration proposal that some commit
ments made for lend-lease and
foreign relief be reduced drastically
an that military demands also be
trimmed for the April-June quarter
to allow civilian supplies to be main-
tined near present levels.
Replreisentatives of the War de
partment and agencies representing
lend-lease and foreign relief have
resisted the WFA idea. A week ago
War Mobilization Director James F.
Byrnes turned the whole matter
over to a seven-man government
committee headed by Leo T. Crow
ley, foreign economic administrator.
The President had Byrnes’ an
nouncement before him today when
he began his food discussion. He
said the reason for the committee
was largely food, but not entirely
so. The group, he added, will act
as a clearing house.
Taking issue with critics, the
Presiednt used sugar as an example.
Suppose this commodity was short
—although he said it isn’t—and
American consumption was cut 10
per cent. He contended the people
here would still live, while sharing
with those who need it more abroad.
Some need it more than we do,
he said, citing what he called mal
nutrition in Holland.
Sugar, meat butter and other fats
are among the commodities for
which demand exceeds prospective
supply. War food offi|.Sals' have
warned that civilians here may have
to get along with less meat, lard,
cheese and evaporated milk, and
probably less poultry and eggs.

The wearing of the green may be
Irish, but the eating of the greens is
universal—or should be. Greens are
rich in vitamin A and good sources
of vitamin C and iron. Nutritions
say the average American could well
eat as much as 50 percent more green
vegetables.
Since vitamins disappear as vege
tables wilt and wait, use green vege
tables fresh—the fresher the more
vitamin C; the greener, the more
vitamin A. To enjoy leafy vegeta
bles at their best, wisk them from
grocery or garden to table with only
a brief pause in salad bowl or cook
ing kettle. When they must be held
for a day or so, keep them cool,
damp, and lightly covered. Pile
loosely to prevent crushing.
To keep greens as bright as a St.
Patrik’s Dav shamrock, home econo
mists of the U. S. Department of Ag
riculture say to cook them quickly—
just until tender—season simply with
salt and! meat drippings or other fat,
and serve at once. Usually no water
needs to be added in boiling greeny
since the water that clings to the
leaves is sufficient. Cover to speed
cooking. Don’t dump any pot liquor
down the drain—^valuable vitamins
and minerals are dissolved in it. Use
surplus juices in soup, gravy, or a
vegetable cocktail.
Quick-cooking greens are good
bets for hurry-up meals. Approxi
mate boiling times ate: Spinach,
shredded cabbage, 5 to 10 minutes;
beet greens, quartered cabbage, 10-
15 minutes; dandelion greens, turnip
greens, 10-20 minutes; collards, 20
minutes, kale, 10-25 minutes; and
broccoli, 15-25 minutes.
Boys and girls are the nation’s
freatest assets. Their education,
their training, their spiritual and
physical care, must be the constant
concern of every adult. The boys
and girls of today will be the men
and women of tomorrow, and, in, the
words of Woodrow Wilson, the future
of our nation and of the world will
be in the hands of the men an women
of a future that is but a little way
ahead of us. May they be the kind
of men and women the world will re
quire. Youth is the future!
April 28 to May 5 will be designat
ed as Boy and Girls Week. During
this time it is suggested that we
stress education in developing better
citizens, health and safety as im
portant in developing good health
habits, emphasize responsibilities in
the home and community and instill
patriotism through sale of bonds and
stamps and collection of salvage.
This is a good time to focus atten
tion on the need of boys and girls.
