Those who had their dogrs vacci nated for rabies during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1944 by a li censed vetemarian, and expect to be exempted from dog tax will please bring their certificate of vaccination when appearing to pay taxes. NEWBERRY DRUG CO. NOTICE OF DELINQUENT TAX SALES The State of South Carolina, County of Newberry. To All Whom These Presents May Concern: Whereas, by an Act of the Gen eral Assembly of the State of South Carolina, entitled, “An Act in Re lation to Forfeited Lands, Delin quent Lands, and Collection of Tax es,” approved December 24, 1887, and Acts amendatory thereof, the Treasurer of Newberry Countty of the aforesaid state, has in compli ance therewith, issued in the name of tht State, tax executions against defaulting taxpayers of the afore said county and state as herein be low listed and has directed T. L. Hill as Tax Collector of Newberry County, or his lawful deputy, to levy the same by distress and sale of so much of the defaulting tax payer’s estate, real or personal, or both, to satisfy the taxes of each defaulter. Whereas, it is further provided by the said Act, and Amendatory Acts that under and by virtue of the said tax executions, the Tax Col lector of Newberry County shall seize and take possession of so much of the defaulting taxpayer’s estate real or personal, or both, to raise a sum of money sufficient to cover delinquent taxes of each tax payer hereinafter listed plus the charges thereon. Having complied with these terms, the Tax Collector will, after advertisement, sell to the highest bidder or bidders for cash, the same property before th Court House door of the aforesaid her 6th, 1944), within the usual hours for public sales. After com pleting these sales, the Tax Col lector will give to the purchaser (upon his complying with the terms of sale) a receipt for the purchase money, but not to make title to the purchaser until after the lapse of twelve months from the day of sale. They are all predators in na ture, feeding chiefly on such animals as they can overtake and overpower, chiefly rabbits, gophers, squirrels, rats, mice, ground-living birds, etc., and also feeding to some extent on fruits, berries and insects. More than thirty species and sub species if foxes are listed for North America, but here in South Carolina our wild native foxes are of just two species: namely, gray fox and red fox. We do not know that these two interbreed although each varies somewhat in color. The gray fox has much rusty-red along flanks and those which show this most are some times mistakenly called “crosses.” Gray fox occurs in all parts of the state and is more addicted to the open, level country; it is longer-leg ged than the red, and is (or said to be) the swifter runner, yet is more inclined to take to hole, and living in more open country, it is more 1 lot in School District No. 52, in the County and State aforesaid, assessed in the name of Eddie Thomas Estate. 1 lot, 1 building in School Dis trict No. 52, in the County and State aforesaid, assessed in the name of Minnie Bailey. Sometimes you may see one caged at a filling sta tion along the highway. Red fox occurs chiefly in our mountains and from there north ward;—shorter-legged, 'perhaps not so swift but of good endurance, and living in rougher, broken conutry with rocky cliffs and being less in clined to take to hole, it gives a more difficult chase and is less often caught. Hide more valuable than that of the gray. I have not myself seen red fox caught further down- state than Anderson county; our mountaineers tell me that it is pre sent all through our mountains yet even there, there are more grays than reds. Foxes rae notably wary and shy animals, the saying “cunning (or, sly) as a fox” has a very real and accurate meaning. They employ real skill in hunting their prey and in escaping from man and his dogs, and even in detecting and avoiding traps and poisoned baits. They are often present or even common in places where their presence is scarcely expected. Being dog-like animals they are of course often infested with fleas, and there have been several accounts of foxes showing marvellous instinct in getting rid of fleas—but—my space is up!
