L. Boulware have been notified by the War Department that their son Staff Sgt. John E. Boulware, was seriously wounded in action on July 27th, in France. Spending 15-Day Furlough At Home Pvt. William McGill is spending a 15-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. McGill on Main street enroute to his new base at .Greenville, Penn., from Fort Mon mouth, N. J. Home From Alaska Joe Bishop, who has been stationed in the U. S. Army in Alaska, is home on a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Bishop in the county. Spends Weekend Here Gpl. Dick Mims stationed at Fort Jaokson, spent the past weekend with his wife, Mrs. Mims at the Newberry Hotel Where she is making her home. Transferred To Georgia Pvt. James D. Hall was transferred last week from Camp Blanding, Florida, to Fort Benning, Ga., where he has begun training with the para troopers. His wife the former Willie Maye Stone and daughter, June, are now making their home at 140 Friend street in the Rogers’ apartment. Stationed In France Mrs. Mae A. Aull received a V- MaiJ letter from her son. Pvt. Julian Aull last Saturday wrritten from France where he is now stationed with the 110 Infantry. Private Aull has been in the service 16 months and overseas since October. Transferred To Texas Cpl. Laurence D. Chapman, son of Solicitor and Mrs. B. V. Chapman, has been transferred from Kingsman, Art., to Laredo, Texas, where he will receive special training at a gunnery school. Promoted To Rank Of Sergeant Corporal Harry E. Crosby, son of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson A. Crosby of Whitmire, has been promoted to the rank of sergeant in Italy, where he is stationed with the Fifth Army, as a lineman with a signal unit. Visiting Parents Lieut, and Mrs. Olin B. Cannon, Jr., stationed at Fort Meade, Md., arrived in the city Tuesday night to visit in the home of Lieutenant Can non’s parents. Dr. and Mrs. O. B. Cannon on Johnstone street. Wounded In France Mr. and Mrs. D. L. McCullough, Sr., of Whitmire, has received a telegram from the War Department saying that their son, Cpl. William L. McCullough was wounded on the ninth of July in France. Before entering the service, Cor poral McCullough was employed at the Charleston Navy Yard. He en tered the service the 18th of August 1943, and has been overseas since March. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds and bravery. Promoted To Rank Of Major Julia Elizabeth White, daughter of Mrs. J. W. White, Caldwell St., was recently promoted from captain to the rank of major in England where she is stationed with the 65th Gen eral Hospital. Major White has been overseas since last October. Prior to volun teering for the Army Nurse Corps she was at Duke University, Durham, N. C. Commissioned Lieutenant Thomas E. Davis, Jr., son of Mrs. Thomas E. Davis, 725 Caldwell street, was commissioned second lieu tenant in ceremonies a t Fort Knox, Kentucky on August 12th. He was a member of the 66th graduating class of the Armored Officer Candi date School. One hundred new officers received their gold bats upon completion of a rigorous 17-week course covering every phase of the employment of armored equipment and organiza tions in modern warfare. Most of the officers will be assigned as file- toon commanders in tank, armored infantry or mechanized cavalry units. Lieutenant Davis is now spending a 10-day leave with his parent? and sister, Mary Ann Davis, before re porting to Camp Polk, La., for fur ther orders. PERSONAL ITEMS Mrs. F. H. C-ine, of Laurens, was a visitor in the city last Saturday. Mr. and Mirs. Ben F. Dawkins spent a few days last week in Ches terfield with relatives. Mrs. P. C. Singrley, of Prosperity, was a business visitor in Newberry last Saturday. Miss Martha Miller, of Whitmire, was a business visitor here last Fri day. Mrs. Carrie Reams is spending this week in Whitmire with her daughter. Mrs. Julia Riser and family. Miss Ann Carpenter is spending a week wih her grandmother, Mrs. Minnie Cunningham, in Greer. Darby has returned to her home after spending a few days with friends in Wilmington, N. C. Mrs. James Smith is spending this week in Greenwood with her mother, Mrs. Eunice Glasgow. Mrs. H. L. Parr is attending the Worker's Conference of the A. R. P. church at Bon darken, N. C. this week. Mrs. Jimmie Ruff and two daugh ters, Lane and Lila Ann are visiting 'Mrs. Ruff’s mother, Mrs. E. M. Lane and Mrs. Billie Beard. Mrs. J. N. McCaughrin left Thurs day for Bon darken, N. C. where she will attend the Worker’s Conference of the A. R. P. church this weekend. Tolbert and grandson, Joseph Tolbert, Jr. BOXES ARE READY Boxes and election material for the second primary to be held next Tues- |.day will be ready for delivery to ex ecutive committeemen or their agents Saturday at the new court house The second primary will be held in only 29 of the 50 boxes in the coun ty; three boxes comprise the Little Mountain magisterial district where W. A. Counts and Oallie B. Metts are in a run-over, while there are 26 boxes in the Newberry magisterial district where Lonnie M. Graham and Ralph G. Higgins will fight it out Tuesday. Polls will open and dose at the uaual time and managers will be the same and will be expected to report a t the boxes without further notice Tuesday morning at eight o’clock; otherwise they will contact their executive committeeman. FIVE CANNERIES ON FULL SCHEDULE IN NEWBERRY COUNTY Awarded Infantry Badge i Pvt. Charles H. Grant, of 1319 Milligan street, has been cited by his ; regiment of the 88th Infantry Divi sion and awarded the Combat Infan tryman Badge for actual participa tion in combat with the enemy on the Fifth Army front in Italy. Standards for the badge are high. Tha decoration, which was recently ! authorized by the War Department, 'is awarded to the infantry soldier who has proved his fighting ability | in combat. i The badge consists of a silver rifle set against a background of infantry blue, enclosed in a silver wreath. Five canneries in various sections of the county are now running full capacity and have stepped-up the output to three-day week instead of jthe two-days a week as planned in order to meet the large demand for canning. Superintendent of Educa tion C. E. Hendrix said today. Ail canneries are canning thou sands of cans of seasonable vege tables for the resident of the com munities. Awarded Second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster Staff Sgt. Julian L. Counts, has been awarded the second Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster for the Air Medal, it was announced by 15th Army Air Force headquarters. In the words of the citation, Ser geant Counts, aerial engineer, was awarded the cluster “for meritorious achievement while participating in sustained operational activities against the enemy.” Sergeant Counts is stationed in Italy with a Libera tor bombardment group of the l!>£h Army Air Force which has been bombing German held targets in Europe. Before being inducted into the army January 30, 1943. He was a farmer. Works While On I^ave Jessie Floyd Hiller, better known as “Dick”, who was one of the first volunteers to leave Newberry county in the present war recently returned home for an eleven (11) day leaye from Fort Bragg, N. C. This young man went to the New- I berry Cotton Mill and asked for work while home on bis leave. When asked about working while on his leave he stated, “There is a need for workers at the present time and also practically all my former buddies are in service and if I can do some thing to help with the war effort I am glad to do so.” j This type of spirit shown by our men in service sometimes puts some of us on the home front to shame. T. Wike. Petty Officer Lancas ter is a member of the seabees, and was stationed in the Aleutian Is lands, 14 months prior to returning to the states about six months ago.
