TURNER Jeweler HOME DEMONSTRATION (Continued from page one) as fluffy as down or springy whole small feathers and they break up more easily if you use them by them selves. A mixture lasts better. The first thing to do with newly plucked feathers is to wash them and dry them thoroughly. If you don’t do this promptly you may find the feathers get moldy or develop strong odors. soon as you can-, soak the feathers in lukewarm soapy water containing household ammonia, or baking soda, or borax. Use ammonia if any of the feathers are blod-stain- ed. This scouring removes dirt and natural grease. Rinse the feathers thoroughly in lukewarm water. Then soak them again in warm clear wa ter for 30 or 40 minutes, and drain them. Dry the feathers as fast as you can by placing them in cloth bags and hanging them in a warm breeze. Don’t fill the bags over a third or a hall full of damp feathers, to allow for plenty of air cureulation and the increased size of the feathers as they plump up and take up more room. Shake and plump the bags at regu lar intervals until you are sure all the feathers are dry. Tu'-n the bags end to end and side to skit- on the line about every hour. LT. It is supposed to have been built by Sir. Isaac Newton without any bolts, pegs, or screws, being held together simply by the way the timbers were wedged togeth er. However, some of his colleagues didn’t believe it had been done, so they tore the bridge down to find out, and after their curiosity had been satisfied, they found they could n’t get it back together. Now it is bolted in all the joints. The River Cam flows lazily thru the town, and walking along its peaceful banks and across the cen turies old college gardens, it is hard to realize that just a couple of hun dred miles away armies are locked in the greatest war in history. But about that time a P-51 will “buzz” the town, or a formation of Flying Fortresses will fly over end break the spell, and make one realize that after all the reason for being over here in the first place is not to go “punting” on the river. To get back to the tour on my first visit, one incident happened that embarrassed me just a little, and must have shocked the dear old lady who was showing us around. We were at one of the colleges, and j I noticed a tree that seemed to be growing out of a fairly large mound of dirt. Rather, it didn’t seem to be growing, but looked quite dead. “What’s that?” I asked the guide. “A camouflaged air raid shelter?” “Oh, no,” came the rather horrified reply. That is a famous mulberry tree connected with the poet John Milton.” Just what the connection j was I never did get. Whether he i planted it, or sat under it while a student at Cambridge I suppose I will never know. I talked to George Scruggs the other day on the phone, and we made arrangements to meet in Cambridge, but he wasn’t able to make it. He has moved since then but I don’t know where, as I haven’t heard from him since. It was Sunday, and while I was waiting outside the Red Cross club where I was to have met him, and watching the people go by, I noticed a preacher across the street. They are easy to spot from their frock coats, clerical vest and collar. He was with his wife, I took her to be, and neither of them could have been a day under 75. There was a young girl coming the other way, who was about 17 or 18, and as she passed the clerical couple, I couldn’t help hut notice the old gentleman turn and bestow upon her one of the most “wolfish” stares I have ever seen. You would have laughed to see him, with his prayer book clutched to his chest, and tottering up the street. “Hope springs eternal in the human breast.” I guess this will have to be enough tonight. It’s eleven o’clock, and beginning to get dark, so I will eith er have to pull the blackout shades or turn out the lights and go to bed. I think I will go to bed.—Luke.” GILDER & WEEKS Drug Values Fresh Shipment Russell.McPhail CANDY xnanent Wave Solution, shampoo, curlers and wave set. Sale. Money back guar antee.
