XVA^ PRISONERS HELD IN U. S.
A total of 183,618 prisoners of
war are now interned in the United
States.
And a great number of them are
working in American fields and oth
er places where there is acute labor
shortage.
Of these captives, 133,135 are
Germans, 50,136 are Italians and
only 347 are Japs.
The Army is carrying on an ed
ucational program designed to “de-
Nazify” the Germans by giving
them a chance to se how derru'cracy
works.
The prisoners are in no sense put
into competition with American la
bor.
But it is declared that their work
has been “of vital importance in ag
riculture.’’
The War Department says that:
“T^erei we fie 3,600 prisoners
war moved into the sugar cane fields
of the South within three days af
ter a freeze—an emergency which
made it necessity to harvest the
crop within a week.
“Use of the prisoners of war in
the South has occurred not only in
the cane crop, but also in cotton,
rice and peanuts.”
It is reported that only 285 .pris
oners have escaped and up to May
5 only five of them were still at
lar «' e - . , . -
All wages pair, when prisoners of
war are privately employed, the
War Department says, are on the
basis of prevailing wages for free
labor in that area.
These wages go to the United
States Treasury, and the prisoners
are paid for themselves 80 cents a
day in canteen coupons by the Army.
Thus far the value of prisoners-
of-war contracts is over 11,000,000.
Most of these prisoners are plenty
glad they are prisoners, instead of
cannon fodder, and they are learning
to like America.
Except, perhaps, the Japs.
And who cares!—Anderson Inde
pendent.

tures, identification cards and so
